The banyan tree where the man hanged himself.
According to reports by Zhang Roran of the Express, Luo from near the Tianhe Sports Center had been suffering from a mental illness for three years. The recurrence of his condition during this period left him utterly exhausted. In the early hours of yesterday morning, unable to endure the torment brought on by his condition, he ended his young life with a red nylon rope on an old banyan tree located on the south side of the Tianhe Sports Center square. No one noticed the incident when it happened; a security guard at the southern gate of the sports center discovered the body while changing shifts in the early morning.
The security guard found the deceased hanging from the tree. The location of the incident was within a large banyan tree on the southern square of the Tianhe Sports Center. The banyan tree chosen by Luo for his suicide was only about 50 meters away from the entrance of a large underground mall. At around 8:50 AM yesterday, the police had already removed the body from the tree and placed it under a sunshade umbrella beneath the banyan tree. Police officers and forensic doctors were investigating the scene and taking photos as evidence.
Witnesses reported that at around 7 AM, the security guards at the southern main gate of the sports center were changing shifts. During routine patrol, a security guard who started work at 7 AM noticed someone leaning against a banyan tree in a small cluster of trees on the south side of the square. Upon closer inspection, he discovered a young man hanging from the banyan tree and immediately called the police. "One of his feet was resting on a branch of the banyan tree, so the security guard was puzzled as to why someone would be climbing the tree so early?" Witnesses stated that the deceased was about 30 years old, his head was tied with a red nylon rope, his feet were about a meter off the ground, and his face appeared peaceful after being taken down.
The man had suffered from a mental illness for three years.
At around 9 AM yesterday, an elderly man wearing a gray baseball cap anxiously entered the police cordon, lifted the sunshade covering the body, and burst into tears uncontrollably. Subsequently, the police wanted to transport the body to the funeral home, but the elderly man sat on a stone bench under the banyan tree, furrowed his brows, and called relatives to come to the scene.
