In court, Nie's defense attorney argued that Nie had significant psychological issues at the time of the crime. The main cause of his criminal intent was due to negative psychological issues and emotions. Nie felt disillusioned with society and life, having a mentality of厌世轻生 (world-weariness and suicidal tendencies). The defense requested lenient punishment for Nie.
"People living in high-end neighborhoods tend to be wealthier," Nie said, explaining how he searched online for such neighborhoods and eventually targeted World Trade Lijing Cheng.
Yesterday, Nie was sentenced by the Xihu District Court in Hangzhou to 10 years in prison, one year deprivation of political rights, and fined 10,000 yuan for robbery.
"Because of this, you decided to rob?" the prosecutor asked.
"I had already decided I didn't want to live anymore before doing this. If it succeeded, it would prove how great I am. If not, I would harm myself. When confronting the police, an officer said that jumping from the eighth floor onto an air cushion would still result in death, so I jumped (this was on the tenth floor)," Nie defended himself.
Nie paused and continued: "I feel this society is very fake, like I'm living in an illusionary world where many people around me don't tell the truth."
"How did you think of robbing?" the prosecutor asked.
In court, Nie admitted that in August he had purchased security uniforms, electric batons, spring knives, extendable sticks, pepper spray, daggers, fake eyebrows, fake beards, masks, binoculars, and other tools used for committing the crime.
