During the team building activities in Beijing, some participants often make such mistakes: they always think in a straight line while completing the projects. As a result, the project becomes more and more difficult and their ideas become narrower and narrower. Consequently, they waste a lot of time on one problem and the project ends up failing. In real life, how can we break this traditional way of thinking? And how can we put down the current methods and pick up a way of thinking that we don't usually use? This requires us to recognize our shortcomings and gradually train our thinking patterns. Let our thoughts in our brains be like the branches of a big tree, rather than like a utility pole with no edges or corners.
Regarding this issue, coaches in the activity often tell everyone such a story. The story goes like this: A long, long time ago, in remote mountainous areas, every household raised dogs. No one took care of the dogs; they just went back to their owner's house to eat when they were hungry. Otherwise, they just ran around on the streets. If they could find food, they wouldn't come back for a long time. One day, a beggar came to the street, pitifully going door-to-door begging for food. At this moment, a dog found him and chased him all over the street. In the end, the beggar was bitten by the dog. The next day, the beggar still had to go to the town to beg. Since he was bitten by the dog the first time, he became more cautious this time and decided to take a stone with him, so if that dog came out to bite him again, he would have a weapon. So, the beggar who had a stone in his pocket walked into the town again, pitifully going door-to-door begging for food. At this moment, the dog appeared again.
When the beggar with a stone in his pocket entered the village for the second time, he was attacked by the dogs again. Unfortunately, this time he was not attacked by one dog but by two dogs. There was nothing he could do because he only had one stone. How could he deal with two dogs at the same time? After hitting one dog, the beggar turned around and ran, but how could he run faster than the dogs? In the end, he was bitten by the other dog. On the third day, the beggar still had to go begging. This time he carried two stones in his pocket. Coincidentally, when he arrived at the village, three dogs appeared. The beggar was bitten by the dogs again. Back home, the beggar thought, why am I always being bitten by the dogs? Fortunately, on the fourth day, he carried a big bag of stones to go begging, to prevent more dogs from attacking him. However, carrying so many stones made it very inconvenient to beg. He didn't get any food and was exhausted from carrying the stones. Just as he was feeling discouraged and knocking on someone's door, the dogs appeared again, and this time, a whole group of them. The beggar thought, no matter what, you're going to bite me. Fortunately, today I will fight with you. So, he put down the stones and picked up a stick to hit the dogs. Surprisingly, after hitting a few times, all the dogs ran away. The beggar suddenly realized that a stick was more effective than a whole bag of stones.
