At 5:15 on January 21st, while still asleep, the home of Liu Fulin from Yujia Gou Village in Liedong Town, Mulan County, was knocked on. His brother-in-law hurriedly came to tell him that his parents' house was on fire. When Liu Fulin arrived at his parents' house, he saw smoke inside and quickly gathered the villagers to put out the fire. After the fire was extinguished, they found his father and mother had been burned beyond recognition and were not breathing. At the time, the Liu brothers thought their parents might have died from smoke inhalation. Given that the next day was the Spring Festival, the Liu brothers buried them on the same day, burying the bodies in the southeast field of their village, hastily dealing with the aftermath. During the incident, Liu Fulin's father, Liu Jingchun, was 91 years old, and his mother, Wang Jingzhen, was 86 years old.

Police combined the doubts raised earlier by the Liu brothers and identified Chen Lidong from the same village as a suspect, secretly monitoring him. Chen Lidong is 35 years old, also known as Chen Liuzi, born on April 20, 1977. He was suspected of robbery in Rongcheng City, Shandong Province, on June 27, 2001, and was sentenced to ten years in prison, being released early in 2008. After being released, he acted recklessly in the village, often "borrowing" money from others and causing harm. Many villagers dared not speak out against this.

After finishing the funeral for the elderly couple, the children of the Liu family began sorting through the elders' belongings. In their parents' room, the brothers noticed some strange phenomena. On the day of the fire, when the children arrived outside the door, they found it locked from the outside with a stone blocking the entrance. Normally, their father slept at the head of the kang (a traditional Chinese bed), and their mother slept at the end. However, that day their positions were swapped, and both were found lying face down. This series of strange phenomena raised suspicions among the Liu brothers, who believed that their parents' deaths were not as simple as the fire scene suggested.

At 9:30 AM on January 30th, Liu FuGui reported the case to the Mulan County Public Security Bureau. Upon receiving the report, the bureau conducted an investigation, determining that only an autopsy could determine the cause of death. To handle the funeral before the New Year, Liu Fulin did not cremate his parents but directly buried them. The bodies of the Liu couple had already frozen, requiring thawing before an autopsy could be performed.

At 17:38 on February 4th, the first arrest team, consisting of Qi Tiedong, the instructor of the Criminal Investigation Brigade of the Mulan County Public Security Bureau, and Yang Shaobo, the director of the Liedong Town Police Station, captured Chen Lidong in Anjia Tun of Liedong Town.

To deceive others, the police temporarily did not investigate the scene, instructing the victim's family to preserve the scene and consistently claiming that the cremation department discovered unreasonable burial practices and required cremation. Subsequently, the police conducted an autopsy, revealing that the Liu couple had blunt force injuries, dying from cranial damage inflicted by someone using a blunt object. There were signs of strangulation on Liu Jingchun's neck, and Wang Jingzhen had been sexually assaulted, confirming that the two were murdered and their bodies destroyed afterward.

After four hours of interrogation, Chen Lidong finally confessed that at around 11 PM on January 20th, after drinking, he went to his neighbor Liu Jingchun's house, raping the female owner Wang Jingzhen. Afraid she would report him, he struck her head with a wooden stick, killing her, then strangled the paralyzed Liu Jingchun. At 4:10 AM the next morning, Chen Lidong returned to Liu's house with 10 kilograms of gasoline, pouring it over the two bodies and setting fire to the scene. Currently, Chen Lidong has been criminally detained by the Mulan police, and the case is still under further review.
