According to Xinhua News Agency, a 40-year-old German pregnant woman gave birth to a healthy baby while in a "vegetative state."
German media reported on the 9th that this woman was 13 weeks pregnant when she suffered from vascular blockage caused by heart disease, which led to brain damage and put her into a vegetative state. However, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy after 22 weeks.
The University Hospital of Erlangen in Bavaria, Germany, said that the baby has been born for over a year now, but the hospital did not release the news earlier in order to protect the privacy of the family.
A hospital official stated that they had originally planned to keep the information confidential because the hospital was concerned that the outside world might accuse them of experimenting on this woman.
DPA reported that the condition of this woman is referred to as "persistent vegetative state," where she could wake up during the day but was unable to speak and showed no awareness of her surroundings.
The report mentioned that in the 1980s, the United States saw its first case of a comatose patient giving birth, but such situations have raised ethical controversies.
