Color us confused. Unless we're missing something, Samsung has just re-plumped up the underwhelming Galaxy Tab 7.0+ with an Android 8.0 Ice Cream Sandwich refresh and a rename to the Galaxy Tab 2. I hate to open with such an accusatory tone, but having read (and re-read) today's press release, that's exactly what it looks like -- a spec-for-spec comparison between "generations." Designed from the ground-up in 2010, the Galaxy Tab 2 shaves off some bulk, measuring thick at 10.5mm and weighing 344g (down from 11.98mm and 380g), but it's still ever-so-slightly thicker than September's Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus (9.96mm). Assuming it uses the same chip architecture, the Galaxy Tab 2 downgrades the Tab 7.0 Plus' 1.2GHz processor to 1.0GHz (putting it on par with the original Galaxy Tab 7.0). It's almost identical innards otherwise to the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. That includes a 7-inch WSVGA (1024x600 resolution) TFT touchscreen, a 3-megapixel rear camera and VGA front-facing camera (downgraded from the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus' 2-megapixel front shooter), 1GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and 8GB (another via microSD up to 32GB). Model options come with either Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 or 3G support as well. With Google's latest snack-themed operating system, the Galaxy Tab 2 will feature Samsung's newly launched AllShare Play service, which lets you stream multimedia content between compatible devices. Neither software alone is enough to justify a new model and the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus is expected to get ICS sometime this spring -- probably around the time the Galaxy Tab 2 hits shelves.
