The Development of Industrial Instruments Requires More Comprehensive Talents
Introduction: In 2009, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security adjusted related job categories, merging thermal engineering instruments, automation instruments, chemical instruments, etc., into a single category known as industrial automation instrument and equipment assembly. This means that the job category has become more comprehensive and complete, applicable in wider fields, but at the same time, it has also raised higher requirements for the talent pool. Currently, there is a significant shortage of talent in this field.
Yang Liang from Aba Aluminum Plant of Bosai Group is a participant from the Sichuan representative team. In his work, he operates multifunctional cranes and frequently uses multimeters and insulation testing instruments. He is participating in the competition for industrial automation instrument and equipment assembly workers.
In the preliminary competition held in Sichuan Province, Yang Liang felt it was manageable, "Maybe because I happened to be well-prepared." However, after taking the written exam of the "Revitalization Cup" final on October 24th, Yang Liang became a bit worried. "The content of the competition is much broader than what we are exposed to. I'm not confident in myself." Yang Liang graduated from the Aba Teachers College in Sichuan Province in 2009, having studied knowledge about industrial automation, which he often applies in his work, but he still found the competition challenging.
In fact, many participants in the competition for industrial automation instrument and equipment assembly workers have similar feelings as Yang Liang. This occupation was included in the national first-class competition for the first time this year, and it places high demands on the participants' overall quality and knowledge reserve. Lei Yuntao, head referee of the competition and professor at Tianjin Vocational and Technical Normal University, gave an interview to the reporter regarding the relevant situation of this occupation.
Lei Yuntao introduced that in 2009, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security adjusted related occupations, merging thermal engineering instruments, automation instruments, chemical instruments, etc., into the single category of industrial automation instrument and equipment assembly. This means that "the occupation has become more comprehensive and perfect, applicable in wider fields, but at the same time, it has also raised higher requirements for the talent pool," Lei Yuntao said, "Due to the previous detailed division of labor, the original skilled talent pool is aging, with relatively single skills. Currently, there is an urgent need to cultivate a group of talents who master automated process control and possess comprehensive skills."
It is understood that industrial automation instrument and equipment assembly workers are applied in petrochemicals, biopharmaceuticals, large-scale process control, and other fields, especially involving many pillar enterprises. The reason why the state grouped several previous occupations into one major category is due to the massive demand for this technology in various fields.
Lei Yuntao believes that currently, there is a large shortage of talent in this occupation because it requires very high overall quality from the talent. Not only does it require design capabilities, but also hands-on operational capabilities, including maintaining equipment and controlling production processes. It is not only necessary to understand the related structures of instruments and meters, but also to have knowledge reserves and sharp judgment abilities related to the industry.
"Many migrant workers cannot do this job, and university students do not particularly identify with frontline work," according to Lei Yuntao's observation, among the practitioners of this occupation, university undergraduates account for only about 20%. In Lei Yuntao's view, if university students can settle down and have high-end knowledge as support, the prospects for working in this occupation would be very good.
In the talent market, there is a supply shortage for this type of talent. "Although there are schools specifically cultivating talent for this occupation, due to the late merger of job categories and the failure to keep up with equipment and knowledge updates, the cultivated talent is far from meeting social demands." Lei Yuntao said that he hopes that through skill competitions, high-level talent can be attracted and encouraged to enter related industries and engage in this work.
