The development of industrial instruments requires more all-round talents. In 2009, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security adjusted related job categories, merging thermodynamic instruments, automation instruments, chemical instruments, etc., into one category: industrial automation instruments and equipment assembly. This means that the job category has become more comprehensive and perfect, applicable in a wider range of fields, but at the same time, it also raises higher requirements for the talent pool. Currently, there is a large gap in the number of talents in this field.
Yang Liang from Aba Aluminum Plant of Bosai Group is a contestant from the Sichuan team. In his work, he operates multi-functional overhead cranes and frequently uses multimeters and insulation testing instruments. He participated in the competition for industrial automation instrument and device assembly workers.
In the preliminary competition held in Sichuan Province, Yang Liang felt okay, "Maybe I just happened to be lucky." However, after participating in the final written exam of the "Revitalization Cup" on October 24th, Yang Liang became a bit worried. "The content of the competition is much broader than what we usually encounter. I'm not confident about myself." Yang Liang graduated from the Aba Teachers College in Sichuan Province in 2009, where he studied knowledge related to industrial automation, which he frequently applies in his work. However, he still found it challenging to participate in the competition.
In fact, many contestants in the competition for industrial automation instrument and device assembly workers have similar feelings to Yang Liang. This job category was included in the national first-class competition for the first time this year, and it has high requirements for the contestants' overall quality and knowledge reserve. Lei Yuntao, the head referee of this job category competition and a professor at Tianjin Vocational and Technical Normal University, gave an interview to the reporter regarding the relevant situation of this job category.
Lei Yuntao introduced that in 2009, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security adjusted related job categories, merging thermodynamic instruments, automation instruments, chemical instruments, etc., into one category: industrial automation instruments and equipment assembly. This means that "the job category has become more comprehensive and perfect, applicable in a wider range of fields, but at the same time, it also raises higher requirements for the talent pool," Lei Yuntao said, "Since it used to be a finely divided job category, the original skilled talent pool is aging, with relatively single skills. Currently, there is an urgent need to cultivate a batch of talents who master automatic process control and possess comprehensive skills."
It is understood that industrial automation instruments and equipment assembly workers are applied in fields such as petrochemicals, biopharmaceuticals, and large-scale process control, especially involving many pillar enterprises. The reason why the state merged several previous job categories into one major category is because this technology has a large demand in various fields.
Lei Yuntao believes that currently, there is a large gap in talents for this job category because it has very high requirements for the comprehensive quality of talents. Not only does it require design capabilities, but also hands-on operation capabilities, including equipment maintenance and production process control; not only does it require knowledge of the relevant structures of instruments and meters, but also knowledge reserves and sharp judgment abilities related to relevant industries.
"Many migrant workers can't do this job, and university students don't particularly identify with frontline work," according to Lei Yuntao's observation, among the practitioners of this job category, only about 20% are university undergraduates. In Lei Yuntao's view, if university students can settle down and have high-end knowledge as support, working in this job category will have a very good future.
In the talent market, there is a supply shortage for talents in this job category. "Although there are schools specifically cultivating talents for this job category, due to the late merger of job categories and the failure to keep up with equipment and knowledge updates, the cultivated talents are far from meeting social demands." Lei Yuntao said that he hopes that through skills competitions, high-level talents can be attracted and encouraged to enter related industries and engage in this work.
