We need to recognize the decline in college students' overall quality scientifically and dialectically. In recent years, some college graduates have successfully "sold" themselves in their job search, securing satisfactory positions, but have performed averagely or disappointingly in terms of work ability, and also have many defects in work style. Therefore, when emphasizing the cultivation of overall quality, we cannot vulgarize its content. Our education must focus on cultivating high-level specialized talents with innovative and practical abilities, which is at the core of overall quality.
Overall quality is a dialectical unity of multiple aspects. Overall quality generally includes two aspects: one can be called basic quality, which includes physical quality, psychological quality, political quality, ideological and moral quality, and basic cultural accomplishment; the other is called professional quality, including professional knowledge, professional skills, and professional innovation ability. These two aspects are unified. This unity is first reflected in their mutual influence - professional quality is built on a certain level of basic quality. Without good basic quality, it is difficult to form good professional quality; at the same time, the improvement of professional quality can also enhance the level of basic quality. Thus, it demonstrates the necessity and scientific nature of strengthening the cultivation of overall quality. At the same time, it should be seen that the status of basic quality and professional quality within the overall quality framework is different. Professional quality is the main aspect of the contradiction. The significant distinction between higher education and ordinary primary and secondary school education is professional education. The majority of college graduates will engage in their own majors or related professional work after graduation. Their future actual work requires more of their professional knowledge and professional working ability. Therefore, in the "Higher Education Law", the task of higher education emphasizes the cultivation of high-level specialized talents with innovative and practical abilities. In Article 16 of the "Higher Education Law", regarding the academic standards of higher education, from undergraduates to postgraduates, the academic standards of each level of higher education are measured by professional theory and professional skills. Therefore, having good basic quality is an expression of comprehensive quality for college students, and professional quality is the measure of the level of their comprehensive quality. Hence, higher education must focus on cultivating professional quality while comprehensively improving basic quality.
The content of comprehensive quality is historical and specific. As society continues to progress and science continues to develop, the transformation of social and production types will put forward different requirements on the comprehensive quality of talents. Higher education must adapt to the needs of social and production development, constantly adjusting the content and form of training, and cannot rigidify the content of comprehensive quality. For example, the development of contemporary society has placed high demands on computer technology and foreign language proficiency. Some people say that foreign languages, computers, and driving skills are the passports to entering the 21st century. For college students receiving higher education, mastering these technologies is essential and constitutes an important part of their basic quality. Currently, universities are taking measures to strengthen the cultivation of these skills, especially foreign language proficiency and computer technology, reflecting the requirements of the times on talent quality. This is undoubtedly the right move. However, it must be clear that the cultivation of these qualities should be placed within the scope of basic quality and should not impact or replace the cultivation of professional quality. They are merely tools. If they are emphasized to an inappropriate degree, it will lead to wrong guidance. Currently, the tendency of graduate entrance exams to emphasize foreign languages over professional subjects causes some college students to fail to properly handle the relationship between learning foreign languages and their majors, and may also affect the final quality of graduate training. This requires institutions to correctly define their status in comprehensive quality in order to determine corresponding training strategies. The content of comprehensive quality is not only historical but also specific. Different majors have different talent requirements, and there are individual differences among different educational objects in existing quality. Therefore, the content of comprehensive quality cultivation for each person is specific. In this sense, the content of comprehensive quality does not have a uniform model and is historical and specific. Only by fully bringing out each person's intelligence and talent can the fruits of comprehensive quality cultivation be achieved. Teaching according to individual aptitude is an eternal theme in education. Theoretical exploration of the cultivation of comprehensive quality in college students is necessary, but ultimately, the cultivation and enhancement of comprehensive quality in college students rely on practice. Practice is the fundamental path to improve the comprehensive quality of college students, and the content of comprehensive quality also needs to be corrected, supplemented, and developed in practice.
