Maybe you have been holding off buying a tablet until Windows 8 arrives. Maybe you are really excited about having Windows on ARM - what with the greatly improved battery life it might offer over Intel or AMD based slates. If both of those things are true, you're in for a treat: Windows 8 will include ARM-based Office 15 applications. (WOA) In Steven Sinofsky's recent, 8000+ word blog detailing Windows on ARM, he revealed some interesting tidbits. One, he said, is that the Windows desktop will still be an important part of WOA and ARM users will still be able to access the desktop and desktop applications. Of course, the applications will need to be ported to the ARM architecture, but it's good to get additional confirmation that WOA Metro style apps aren't the only ones getting extra attention. It's also worth noting that WOA will include the core Office 15 applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Sinofsky mentioned that the goal is for WOA to be an "no compromise product," and Microsoft knows that Windows users will want access to industry leading productivity applications, even on non-x86 desktops and notebooks. That's a pretty solid free app bundle of four. Confused? You have every right to be. Microsoft isn't exactly giving away a truckload of office cash, so it's a little strange to hear that they are bundling it with WOA. Then again, this is the same company that has given consumers ad-supported (but still fairly freeish) Office Starter as well as free usage of Office Web Apps. So why not throw in some ARM apps as well? But maybe Sinofsky meant that there will be a version of Office 15 included with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview as well as WOA, giving users a chance to test them both out at the same time. This could make sense since aside from being preloaded on ARM-based Windows hardware, it won't be downloadable or purchasable by consumers. So what is Microsoft playing at here? Are they giving away the apps and hoping to introduce a Dropbox-like SkyDrive storage plan to pair with subscriptions? It has already been widely rumored that Windows 8 will feature heavy SkyDrive integration, so Microsoft could indeed be looking for ways to create a recurring revenue stream from Office users - instead of selling people an upgrade every few years.
