Following its huge investment in Qunar in 2011, every move Baidu makes in the tourism industry has been closely watched. After adding Qunar's air ticket price trends and hotel search and booking entries to its web search results, Baidu Maps recently added a new application for hotel search and reservation.
It is reported that Baidu Maps has added a "hotel" entry in the "Map Treasure Box" on the upper right side of the homepage. The drop-down box under the "Search within View" function above the map at the center of the homepage also sets up popular keywords for hotel searches (as shown in Figure 1).
When users click on the "hotel" entry on the upper right corner of the homepage, hotels near their location will be displayed on the left in map form, while hotel types and price options will be listed on the right. Users can filter and sort hotels based on default settings, price, good reviews, star ratings, or hygiene. Below on the right, the telephone number, reviews, and reference prices of the hotels are listed. Regarding the sources of information for hotel rankings and reference prices, Baidu Maps does not provide clear introductions on its website.
It is worth noting that this time Baidu Maps collaborates with Qunar, Kuxun Travel, and TripAdvisor in the areas of hotel search and reservation. On the Baidu Map hotel search page (as shown in Figure 2), clicking on the corresponding icons of each hotel on the map will display the names of these three companies (with Qunar being the first one displayed). Users can jump to the corresponding hotel pages on the official websites of these three companies to conduct inquiries and reservations. Alternatively, through the "Online Booking" box on the corresponding page of each hotel on Baidu Maps (as shown in Figure 3), users can be redirected to the corresponding hotel pages on Qunar or Kuxun Travel. Currently, from what is visible on the website, the hotel reviews on Baidu Maps also come from these three companies.
This newly launched hotel service by Baidu Maps is seen as an integration of Baidu's existing resources, catering to user needs, especially those of tourists who require a combination of location and services. This represents a further development in the verticalization and segmentation of businesses in the tourism field, which is expected to have an immeasurable impact on increasing traffic and hotel reservation volumes for Qunar, Kuxun Travel, and TripAdvisor.
Users can click on the "hotel" entry on the upper right corner of the homepage, with their nearby hotel options displayed on the left in map form and hotel types and price options listed on the right. Users can screen and sort hotels based on default settings, price, good reviews, star ratings, or hygiene. Information regarding hotel ranking and reference price sources and criteria has not been explicitly introduced on the Baidu Maps website.
