In 2001, 13-year-old Li Zhongyang frequently had nosebleeds. His parents thought it was due to the stress of studying, so they sought treatment at the village health clinic. However, the child's nosebleeds worsened and eventually progressed to vomiting large amounts of blood.

Xu Yanzhi, 46 years old, lives in Qingping Street, Xinmi City. She once had a happy family of four. Eleven years ago, after her son Li Zhongyang was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, their life took a complete turn.

His parents came up with a plan: donating blood voluntarily to ensure that their child and others would have access to blood when needed. Upon hearing the doctor's words, they were utterly shocked. From then on, they embarked on a long journey of seeking medical help.

Due to the child's frequent bleeding, he required continuous blood transfusions. However, because of the tight supply of blood, treatments were often delayed.

To ensure that their child and other patients could receive timely blood transfusions, the mother became a committed voluntary blood donor. During a physical examination before donating blood, it was found that Li Zhongyang’s father wasn't in good enough condition to donate regularly. After donating twice, his responsibility shifted to his wife, who took over as the family's voluntary blood donor.

Xu Yanzhi donates platelets. One unit of platelets is equivalent to 800 milliliters of whole blood. She donates two units each time. To date, she has donated 24 units of platelets, which equals 19,200 milliliters of blood, averaging 3,840 milliliters per year.

From 2007 to now, this 46-year-old woman has voluntarily donated 24 units of platelets, equivalent to nearly 20,000 milliliters of whole blood.

Both of her children are diligent and perform well academically. The couple worked hard to focus on nurturing their children’s education.

After checking at the hospital, the doctors said that the child had a blood disease. Specifically, it was aplastic anemia, meaning that the child's hematopoietic system was malfunctioning, unable to produce normal blood cells, thus affecting normal life activities.

Dr. Dong Xiujuan, head of the Hematology Department at the Third People's Hospital of Zhengzhou, stated that according to medical regulations, the interval between platelet donations should be at least one month. Platelets are a powerful tool for hematology doctors in saving patients' lives. In emergency situations, one therapeutic unit of platelets can save a life.

This mother said, "The doctor told me I'm too thin and shouldn't donate too much blood, but for my child, I would willingly give my life."
