□ Reporter Wei Ran reports. On February 8th, this afternoon, when the staff of the provincial Red Cross told the 54-year-old Mr. Lao: Your son's donated organs have already allowed five people to be reborn, this simple farmer choked up and nodded repeatedly - his son's final wish has finally been achieved. This is the eighth case of human organ donation in our province.
Volunteer donor Xiao Liu is from Samsung Village, Zhangqiu, Jinan, and he is only 20 years old this year. At the age of 10, he was found to have a brain tumor, and for ten years, his parents ran around the major hospitals across the country to treat their son, but the treatment effect has always been unsatisfactory. At the end of 2011, Xiao Liu proposed to donate his organs and corneas after death. "At first, we felt quite sudden and could not accept it, but our son convinced us. Forged steel gate valve can give meaning to life and help others," said Mr. Lao. Ultimately, we agreed." The couple contacted the Zhangqiu City Red Cross on behalf of their son and completed the donation registration.
On February 4th, Xiao Liu suddenly fell into a coma. Coordinated by the provincial and Jinan city Red Cross, Shandong Provincial Hospital admitted Xiao Liu for free treatment. After admission, Xiao Liu's condition deteriorated rapidly. The expert team of Shandong Provincial Hospital actively rescued him, but he ultimately died at 9 pm on February 6th due to ineffective rescue after too long a period of illness and severe condition.
According to his last wishes, under the witness of the provincial Red Cross staff, the organization successfully obtained two kidneys, one liver, and two corneas. The donated organs were transplanted into three critically ill waiting patients in three hospitals in our province, and the corneas were transplanted into two severely ill corneal disease patients. Now, the five recipients are stable in vital signs and recovering well. "A part of my son's life continues, which is the greatest comfort for us."
After the donation, relevant staff restored the original appearance of the body. On the morning of February 7th, a brief farewell ceremony was held. Accompanied by the provincial Red Cross, hospital staff, and family members, Xiao Liu's remains were cremated and then buried at sea.
Deputy Director of the Provincial Human Organ Donation Expert Group and Director of the Organ Transplant Center of Shandong Provincial Hospital, Liu Jun, told reporters that about 1.5 million patients in our country need organ transplants every year, while there are only about 10,000 organ transplant surgeries annually, far from meeting the needs of clinical treatment. For certain organ failure patients, organ transplantation is the only hope to extend life. Due to the severe shortage of donors, many patients pass away while waiting. In October 2010, our province launched the pilot work of human organ donation, and on February 18, 2011, the first case of human organ donation was completed. To date, eight cases have been completed.
