Time: May 24th
Location: Shangdong Shengmao Hotel, Chaoyang District
Event: Fire in the cable shaft of the hotel resulted in the evacuation of more than 500 people.
According to reports, at around 1 p.m. yesterday afternoon, part of the 24th floor cable shaft of the Shangdong Shengmao Hotel in Chaoyang District caught fire, causing the smoke exhaust system to fail, resulting in the evacuation of over 500 employees and guests. During this time, two Turkish flight attendants were overcome by smoke inside a guest room but were fortunately discovered in time by firefighters who carried them out of the building. By 5 p.m., the scene was still closed off, and the guests were transferred to other hotels for temporary accommodation.
The power outage prevented the smoke exhaust system from functioning. The Shangdong Shengmao Hotel is located at the northeast corner of Xiao Yun Bridge. Due to its convenient access to the airport, most of the guests are staff members of various international airlines.
Several guests stated that at around 12:50 p.m. yesterday, thick smoke suddenly appeared in the corridors of the higher floors, and the hotel immediately dispatched security personnel and staff to assist the guests in escaping via the stairs.
The fire department reported that after the incident, more than ten vehicles from the Jiuxianqiao and Zuojiacun fire stations rushed to the scene, and the Wangjing station also sent a 90-meter high ladder truck for support.
Upon investigation, it was found that the fire started in the cable shaft on the 24th floor. The accident caused a partial power supply interruption in the building, rendering the smoke exhaust system inoperable.
The Zuojiacun station arrived first, and several firefighters immediately rushed into the building to search house by house. A few minutes later, team leader Ma Long discovered two women in uniforms in one room. They may have inhaled too much smoke, making their speech unclear and close to unconsciousness. Ma Long quickly carried and supported them, swiftly transferring them to the hallway and working together with hotel staff to carry them down the stairs.
According to the 999 emergency medical personnel, the two women were flight attendants from a Turkish airline company. After examination, no burns or external injuries were found. "We provided oxygen therapy for them and sent them to a nearby hospital," said the emergency medical personnel. After examination, they were found to be fine.
More than 500 people were evacuated.
At around 1:40 p.m., hundreds of hotel employees and guests gathered on the grass below the building. Some anxious foreign passengers paced back and forth on the side of the road, repeatedly asking the staff when they could return to their rooms to retrieve their luggage.
To minimize the impact on the guests, after the incident, the hotel dispatched dedicated personnel to register and contact other hotels for accommodation arrangements. With the cooperation of the fire department, they quickly retrieved luggage for passengers rushing to catch their flights and sent them to the airport with special vehicles.
The fire department stated that the number of people evacuated exceeded 500, and the cause is still under investigation.
