SEOUL, South Korea—LG Electronics Inc. said Friday it has halted sales of a notebook computer model after reports that a battery used in the device melted, according to company spokesman Jik Soo Kim.

Mr. Kim said LG Chem Ltd., the maker of the battery, is investigating what happened. The melting was triggered by a safety feature built into the design to prevent an explosion, he said.

The affected notebook computers have been halted and were only sold in South Korea, Mr. Kim said. On Thursday, a South Korean graduate student using one of the computers discovered that the battery had melted, Mr. Kim said.

In January, a battery made by LG Chem for another LG notebook exploded. Earlier this month, LG Electronics released the results of an independent investigation into that incident, saying the explosion occurred because of "external impact under very high temperature."

A report on the incident, led by the Korea Electronics Technology Institute, also said the battery wouldn't explode during normal use but didn't specify what could have caused the high temperature.

LG Electronics' personal-computer business accounted for 2.5% of the company's total revenue in 2007.
