Nanjing — At around 2:40 PM yesterday, a 12-year-old boy in the 6th grade suddenly collapsed while "doing homework" in his classroom at Jiangning Science Park Elementary School in Nanjing. When he was rushed to the hospital, it was already too late, and after over an hour of unsuccessful resuscitation attempts, the boy was pronounced dead. Why did the child collapse while doing his homework in the classroom? According to classmates, the boy had not completed his homework and was asked by the teacher to stand at the front of the class to finish it. Currently, the police are investigating the matter.
It is understood that the unfortunate elementary school student, surnamed Chen, was 12 years old and a student in Class 6, Grade 6 at Science Park Elementary School. Chen's uncle informed reporters that around 2:40 PM yesterday, the boy's mother suddenly received a call from the school saying that her son had fainted, and the situation seemed serious. The mother immediately rushed to the school and arrived at about 3 PM. By this time, her son had just been loaded onto an ambulance, so she accompanied him to the hospital. Unfortunately, the child appeared to have already passed away en route, and despite over an hour of emergency treatment at the hospital, the 12-year-old could not be saved.
According to Zhou, the vice-principal of the school, the incident occurred during a break when the child was "doing homework" in the classroom. For unknown reasons, the child suddenly collapsed. Upon noticing the situation, the teacher immediately picked him up off the ground and attempted first aid while calling 110 and 120 and informing the school leadership. However, the child ultimately succumbed unexpectedly. Regarding further details, the school official declined to comment.
Chen's family told reporters that according to classmates who were close to the child, it seemed that near the end of a Chinese language class, the teacher assigned some in-class exercises. Because Chen had not completed them properly, the teacher called him to the front of the class to stand there and write his homework on the podium. It was also noted that the weather in Nanjing yesterday afternoon was very hot and humid, which might have contributed to the child's collapse. Chen's family stated that although they cannot yet definitively say that this event caused the child's death, the specific cause of death still awaits investigation by the police. However, they believe that the teacher's action of making the child stand at the podium to do homework was definitely inappropriate.
As of the time of this report, the school has not responded to the claims made by classmates regarding the teacher asking Chen to do his homework at the podium. (Reported by Jiao Zhe)
