A Good Place for Spring Outing - Shanghai Daguan Garden

During the Qingming Festival, spring returns to the earth. Everywhere in Daguan Garden presents a scene of vigorous vitality, making it an excellent time for a suburban outing. Located by the Dianshan Lake, the Shanghai Daguan Garden is truly a great place for spring outings. Choose a bright sunny day with the chirping of birds and the fragrance of flowers, invite your family and friends to Daguan Garden to fly kites, insert willows, and release river lanterns as part of the spring outing activities. You can also taste the fresh fish and shrimp from Dianshan Lake, which is indeed a pleasant experience.

The Qingming Festival is the time when the willows sprout and turn green. There are customs in folk culture to break off willows, wear willows, and insert willows. When people go on a spring outing, they casually break off a few willow branches. These branches can be played with in hand, woven into hats to wear on the head, or taken home to be inserted above the door or on the eaves. Jia Sixie from the Northern Wei Dynasty wrote in "Qi Min Yao Shu": "Put willow branches on the door, and no evil spirits will enter the house." Since Qingming is also a ghost festival, during this time when willow branches sprout, people naturally insert and wear willows to ward off evil. In the picturesque Shanghai Daguan Garden, you can see newly green weeping willows everywhere. Breaking off one or two willow branches and inserting them casually into the spring mud or weaving them into a willow hat to wear on the head has the effect of blessing and warding off evil.

Releasing river lanterns, also known as releasing "lotus lanterns," is a traditional custom of the Chinese nation used to mourn deceased relatives and bless those who are alive. Light the river lanterns one by one and place them in the river or lake, letting them drift with the water. This is done to honor ancestors and express remembrance for loved ones, conveying prayers for happiness and peace, hoping that with the long-flowing stream, diseases and calamities will be removed, bringing happiness and well-being to future generations. In the jade-green pool of Shanghai Daguan Garden, placing the lanterns with written wishes into the pool not only honors the ancestors but also blesses future generations.

During the Qingming season, people gather three or five close friends to come to Daguan Garden, enjoying the beautiful spring scenery while participating in various rich activities. After playing to their heart's content, they return at dusk, making it a joyful spring outing. As the saying goes, "The children of the spring city indulge in spring outings, leaning drunkenly against terraces and laughing as they ascend to the tower."
