Centipede Introduction:
As a traditional precious Chinese medicine, centipedes have been used in medicine for a long time. They were recognized and utilized over 2000 years ago. Many medical monographs such as "Compendium of Materia Medica" have detailed records. Centipedes have high medicinal value, and there are more than 100 Chinese herbal prescriptions made with centipedes. Centipedes are important ingredients in over 30 kinds of traditional Chinese patent medicines such as Ren Shen Re-Zao Wan, Da Huo Luo Dan, Qian Zheng San, showing remarkable efficacy. Companies like Wuhan Nongke Humin Bioengineering Co., Ltd., utilize centipedes to treat phlebitis, thrombotic occlusion, trigeminal neuralgia, cancer detoxification mass, wind removal, shock control, facial paralysis, tetanus, etc. These applications have drastically increased the demand for centipedes. Besides medicinal use, centipedes can also be made into nourishing food. With the progress of social material civilization, centipedes, as treatment and health care products, are highly regarded by people. Centipede wine and centipede Fen health products have successively appeared on the market. Moreover, with the development of medicine, the role of centipede venom has been widely recognized. Centipede venom is more valuable than gold, priced at about $150,000 per kilogram. About 500 grams of venom can be extracted annually from 10,000 centipedes, so the medicinal value of centipede venom far exceeds that of the centipede itself.
Market Demand for Centipedes:
For many years, the market supply of centipedes mainly relied on wild capture, but with the extensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, the natural habitat of wild centipedes has been destroyed, resulting in a sharp decline in natural populations, leading to insufficient market supply. Currently, the national output only meets about 30% of the need, causing a sharp rise in market prices. Artificial centipede breeding has broad prospects for development, and a wave of getting rich by raising centipedes will appear across the country. Raising centipedes yields significant economic benefits, providing valuable Chinese herbs to benefit humanity while allowing centipede raisers to obtain high economic returns. As a valuable herb, centipedes have a large demand. According to statistics, the supply of centipedes only meets 20% to 30% of the demand. Therefore, artificial centipede breeding has become a promising endeavor, as well as a profitable family sideline benefiting the country and its people. From the domestic market perspective, with the rapid development of the Chinese medicine industry in recent years, the Chinese medicine market has become increasingly prosperous. Due to people's renewed trust in Chinese medicine and the great development of Chinese patent medicines, there is now a situation where the supply of valuable Chinese herbs cannot meet the demand, and their market prices continue to rise. In the early 1980s, the market purchase price of centipedes was only about 0.4 yuan per piece, but now it has risen to 2 yuan, yet there is still a severe shortage of supply. The market supply of centipede venom is even more insufficient. From the international market perspective, with further deepening of China's reform and opening-up, Chinese traditional culture has quickly spread worldwide. Many countries, especially Japan and Southeast Asian countries, are importing increasing quantities of centipedes from China each year. On the other hand, centipede venom is very popular in the international pharmaceutical market, with each ounce selling for thousands of dollars.
Centipede Breeding Techniques:
1. Wildland Breeding Method: This method is simple and practical. In winter, dig a small ditch of unlimited length and width in places where centipedes are found, place garbage, broken bricks, animal residues, bones, intestines, fish bones, chicken, duck, and goose feathers inside. Centipedes, attracted by the smell of chicken feathers, will gather to rest and reproduce, which can then be captured in spring. Generally, every 1-2 days, the ditch can be turned over to catch centipedes. After catching them, replenish fresh food and cover with fine soil to continue capturing. Around the Qingming period is the best season for catching centipedes. Additionally, iron rakes can be used to catch centipedes in piles of stones, tree roots, wasteland grass, and shorelines. This method is particularly suitable for first-time centipede breeders, solving the problem of seed sources and being especially appropriate for those without professional breeding conditions.
2. Fully Artificial Indoor Breeding Method: For indoor breeding, cement tanks can be used, with a bottom area preferably measuring 50x40 cm. Stack the cement tanks in a "pin" shape 2-3 layers high, using glass plates as tank covers. Inside the tanks, lay soft fine soil, the thickness varying according to the season. Generally, it is 10 cm in spring and autumn, 5 cm in summer, and around 20 cm in winter. Place broken tiles, small stones, or small wooden blocks on the upper layer; at the four corners of the tank, you can construct triangular water troughs with glass or use water containers instead to provide drinking water for the centipedes. The density of the raised centipedes depends on individual size, different growth stages, and bait conditions. Generally, each tank can raise 200 young centipedes aged 1-2, or 75 centipedes aged 3, or about 40-50 centipedes aged 4 and above. Each tank should have about 4 adult male centipedes. Other aspects can refer to the semi-natural state outdoor artificial pond breeding method.
3. Outdoor Semi-Natural Pond Breeding Method:
(1) The centipede pond should be built in a relatively cool, humid, shaded, quiet slope area. Construct a pond wall 80-100 cm high using bricks, stones, and cement materials. Cement should seal the gaps in the pond walls, and the size of the pond depends on the breeding quantity. Large ponds should be divided into smaller "field"-shaped ponds for separate breeding. Drainage ditches should be set around the pond, and the bottom of the pond should not be cemented. Lay about 6 cm of fine mud first, then place fine stones or broken tiles, leaving gaps. Plant weeds and trees inside the pond and place water dishes to provide clean drinking water, trying to create a natural ecological environment suitable for centipede habitation. Install a 15 cm wide glass strip around the pond mouth, forming a perpendicular "eave" to prevent centipedes from escaping or harmful animals from invading.
(2) The first batch of centipedes for breeding can come from wild collection or purchasing seedlings. Generally, select sexually mature centipedes aged 3-5, requiring strong vitality, black glossy backs, and a ratio of 10 females to 1 male. However, during the egg-laying and hatching period of female centipedes, all male centipedes should be removed and separately bred. The density of pond-bred centipedes is approximately 350-450 per square meter. The humidity inside the pond should be around 60-70%, not exceeding 75-90%. If the humidity is too high, centipedes are prone to bacterial infections and damage, leading to difficulties in shedding and eating, hindering normal development, causing physiological diseases, and even preventing reproduction or reducing it. The temperature inside the pond should be kept between 26-29°C. During summer when temperatures rise to 40-42°C, the water evaporation from centipedes increases rapidly, and cooling measures should be taken frequently by sprinkling water to maintain moisture and lower the temperature. In winter, rice straw can be thrown into the pond to keep it warm, creating a damp, warm, and feed-abundant environment suitable for centipede growth.
(3) Centipedes are carnivorous animals that enjoy eating various insects such as locusts, crickets, cicadas, grasshoppers, dragonflies, spiders, moths, etc. Their feed should primarily consist of poultry and animal meat, such as loaches, eels, earthworms, snails, bats, rodents, geckos, lizards, snakes, fly maggots, termites, pill bugs, and other leftover animal waste products like chicken blood, bones, intestines, feathers, fish and shrimp scraps, etc. Occasionally, centipedes also eat fruits, carrots, watermelon rinds, and tender plant leaves, so green fodder like pennywort and leafy greens can be appropriately mixed at 25-35%. In the evenings of summer and autumn, lamps can be lit to lure insects and moths for centipedes to catch, and some insects can be appropriately placed among the weeds in the pond for centipedes to feed on. However, centipedes can withstand hunger for several days without dying, but attention must be paid to the fact that extreme hunger or severe disturbances may cause them to cannibalize each other. Also, centipedes can go several days without food, but they cannot go a day without water, so water dishes should be placed in the breeding pond to ensure sufficient drinking water. Especially, centipedes are particular about their food and won't eat rotten or smelly items, even if they are insects. Feeding should be adjusted according to the season, with larger amounts needed in spring and summer when activity levels are high, and appropriately reduced in late autumn and early winter. Generally, one adult centipede consumes about 1 gram per feeding, with juvenile centipedes fed every 2-3 days and adults fed daily. Feeding is best done in the evening, clearing any leftover food from the previous day and cutting larger pieces into sections to distribute evenly.
Centipede Processing Technology:
Live centipedes caught should first be scalded to death in boiling water, then the tail end cut off to squeeze out feces and urine. Then take a bamboo slat of the same length and width as the centipede, sharpen both ends, insert one end under the centipede's palate, and the other end into the tail, stretching the centipede straight with the elasticity of the bamboo slat, and dry it under the sun. If it rains, charcoal fire can be used to dry it. After drying, remove the bamboo slats (be careful not to break the head and tail, affecting quality), align the centipedes of similar body length with heads facing one direction, and horizontally clamp them with fine bamboo strips about 1 cm wide. Tie them into rows, with 50 per row, and store them in wooden boxes sealed tightly.
Quality Requirements: Finished centipedes should be thoroughly dry, flat and elongated, with reddish-brown heads, black-green backs with a sheen and two prominent ridges, pale yellow bellies, shriveled bodies, yellow or reddish-brown legs bent backward, the last segment needle-like, cross-section with fissures or hollow, slightly fishy smell, pungent odor, spicy and slightly salty taste, complete heads and tails, no breakage, no insect damage, no mold.
