Eyelid is a special anatomical structure that protects the eyeball. The Korean-style canthoplasty protects it from injury and reduces light input. Through blinking, tears are evenly distributed on the surface of the eyeball. Double eyelids, known as upper eyelid creases, are common in Europeans and Americans, while 30% of Asians have single eyelids. Indications:
Suitable eyes for double eyelid surgery:
1. Larger eyes with thinner upper eyelid skin in single eyelid individuals.
2. One eye is single and the other is double, or the width of the double eyelids on both sides is inconsistent.
3. Inner double eyelids, which means although they are double eyelids, they are barely visible when open or completely disappear.
4. Upper eyelid skin is loose and drooping, pressing on the eyelashes or blocking part of the field of vision.
5. Eyes with less than aesthetically pleasing shapes, such as slanted eyes or mismatched eyes, can be improved through double eyelid surgery.
Surgical methods:
Since everyone's eyelid structure and shape are different, the surgical methods used to form double eyelids vary. The methods of double eyelid surgery can be divided into two categories: suture method and incision method.
● Suture method:
This uses 6-0 nylon thread to suture the dermis of the skin and the tarsus or the levator palpebrae superioris tendon together. The scar adhesion formed by the surgical trauma creates double eyelids. This method is suitable for patients with thinner upper eyelid tissue, longer eye fissures, and younger age. Its advantages are simplicity and ease of operation, with faster postoperative recovery. However, the double eyelid may easily disappear, unable to remove excess skin, orbicularis oculi muscle, and orbital fat, making it unsuitable for patients with thicker upper eyelid tissue or excessive orbital fat, as well as those with epicanthic folds.
● Incision method:
This involves making an incision at the appropriate position on the upper eyelid skin, removing part of the orbicularis oculi muscle or orbital fat, and suturing the skin incision to the tarsus or levator palpebrae superioris tendon. Its advantage is that the anatomical structures in the surgical area are clear, allowing precise operations, removal of excess skin, orbicularis oculi muscle, and orbital fat, forming permanent and natural double eyelids. The downside is that the surgery is more complex with slower postoperative recovery, requiring the surgeon to possess high surgical skills. It is suitable for patients of any age, including older patients with loose upper eyelid skin and excessive orbital fat (including single eyelids and double eyelids but with loose skin).
Standards for successful double eyelid surgery:
1. The double eyelid (double eyelid) has moderate width, with a naturally flowing double eyelid line. The eyelid between the double eyelid line and the eyelid margin is thin and flat, basically symmetrical on both sides, with a natural and beautiful shape, showing no obvious artificial traces.
2. The eye fissure is significantly widened and enlarged compared to before the surgery, making the eyes appear deep-set and reserved, with bright and spirited eyes giving an impression of large, captivating eyes.
