The human genome, also translated as the human gene complex, is the genome of Homo sapiens. It consists of 23 pairs of chromosomes: 22 pairs of autosomes and the sex chromosomes X and Y. The human genome contains approximately 3.16 billion DNA base pairs. Base pairs are two nitrogenous bases bonded together by hydrogen bonds, arranged in sequences of the four bases A, T, C, and G. A portion of these base pairs form about 20,000 to 25,000 genes.
