Under China's academic evaluation system, academic journals are scarce resources with more demand than supply.

For the slack of many college students, Yang Deguang, a doctoral student, is not blind. His prescription is: on the one hand, to free students from the fetters of the index of paper publication; on the other hand, each tutor should lock the graduate students he teaches, participate in the academic activities, subject research of graduate students, as the first person responsible for the training of graduate students. The core issue is that the evaluation of whether a graduate student has academic level and ability is not determined by papers, but by tutors.

Under China's academic evaluation system, academic journals are scarce resources. It is conceivable how difficult it is for graduate students and professors to compete on the same stage. Yang Deguang believes that domestic universities have different levels, and the positioning of graduate student training is also different. 985,211 universities should focus on cultivating academic and graduate talents, and publishing papers can be used as a reference for investigation; But the goal of more ordinary colleges and universities is to cultivate applied postgraduates with broader knowledge and certain research ability, so it is unnecessary to be harsh on publishing papers.

In addition to university teachers, all postgraduate students and doctoral students have a sword of Damocles hanging over their heads: if they want to graduate smoothly and get degrees, they must publish a certain number of papers in the academic journals designated by the school.

Is such a craze for papers supposed to cool down? Professor Yang Deguang, a famous educator in Shanghai, made a bold suggestion: universities might as well trade quantity for quality. Specifically, he hopes that some universities will cancel the regulations on the number of graduate students' papers, and only require everyone to spend more energy on completing their graduation thesis. He even envisaged decoupling master's and doctor's graduation from paper publication, and restoring a simple place for university research.

If students put all their mind on publishing papers, how do they have time to seriously work on projects and write graduation thesis? Yang Deguang thought: Perhaps unreasonable regulations in universities cut down students' interest in research from the very beginning and drove them onto a wrong academic path.

The thesis was originally a carrier of academic research, but under an unreasonable orientation, it may become a poison that inhibits academic achievements.

Recently, until July before graduation, all master's and doctoral students were going through the thesis checkpoint. In order to get the diploma, each student must pass two checkpoints first: one is the integrity checkpoint, and the other is the quantity checkpoint. Integrity means passing the check of the school anti-plagiarism software; Quantity refers to the fact that, in addition to the graduation thesis, a master's degree should publish at least one paper and a doctor needs to publish two papers.

Is it realistic to require postgraduate publications?

In order to meet the standard, the recent topics of the students automatically switched to how to outwit the machine, and some students even boldly wrote guides on the campus BBS: it is still safe to copy books now, because the database of anti-plagiarism software does not have time to record the books. Others are busy contacting the tutors to exchange the page fee for the publication index& hellip;& hellip;

Originally, linking the publication of postgraduate students with the degree was an independent decision made by many universities.

Tutors should have the right to speak on the evaluation of academic standards rather than papers

The current university learning style is not optimistic. A master's supervisor described the survival routine of postgraduate students in his eyes: chatting online, watching movies, playing cards every day, living like gods. I asked the students to do some experiments, and they complained and slacked off. In the second half of the second year, some students prepared to strike after finishing the preliminary experiment, and then reviewed for the PhD entrance examination and went out to work.

For this, there are both praise and criticism among educational circles within the university walls.

In order to prove his point of view, Yang Deguang even carefully consulted relevant laws and found new discoveries: neither the Degree Regulations of the People's Republic of China nor the Guiding Opinions of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China on Revising the Training Program of Graduate Students made any provisions for graduate students to publish papers.

Tutors can easily spot the tricks in the articles published by graduate students, so they can reject such research results and take measures such as postponing graduation.

Without issuing indicators, isn't postgraduate education going to be more laissez-faire? In response to Yang Deguang's suggestion, many university teachers expressed their concerns.
