Xinhua News Agency, August 1 -- The Swiss police are testing a new generation of super cameras to monitor road conditions. These cameras can detect up to 10 types of road violations.
The local newspaper "Sunday Morning" reported on August 1 that these new cameras will be put into trial use at the end of August in Geneva, a city in western Switzerland, first completing the "fixed tasks" of monitoring speeding vehicles and running red lights.
The report said that after setting up, the camera will soon be able to "target" drivers who follow another vehicle too closely while driving, fail to give way to pedestrians, or fail to drive on the right side and overtake in a dangerous manner.
At the same time, if a driver occupies the bicycle lane or bus-only lane, fails to stop according to parking signs, makes illegal turns, or crosses the divider line illegally, all these actions will be captured by the camera.
The report said that the additional functions of the new camera will begin to take effect in 2011.
According to the "Sunday Morning", the current generation of cameras used in Switzerland can only monitor two lanes, while the new cameras can monitor four lanes simultaneously and can monitor 22 vehicles at the same time within a distance of 500 meters.
Jean-Marc Pecorini, an official from the Geneva traffic department, commented on the preliminary results of the trial: "We are very satisfied with this equipment."
