Xinhua News Agency, Zhuzhou - "My right hand is in severe pain now. I can't eat and feel like vomiting," said Ma Xuecheng, who was lying on a bed in the infectious disease department of a hospital in Zhuzhou City, looking dispirited and speaking with difficulty. This was already the third time he had been hospitalized after receiving an injection of rabies vaccine.

Ma Xuecheng, 47 years old, is an internally retired employee of Zhuzhou's Hard Alloy Plant and currently works in Hengyang. On the early morning of the third day of the first lunar month this year (February 16), Ma was scratched on the knee by his own pet dog through his pants but without breaking the skin. "I went to the epidemic prevention station at noon that day and got the rabies vaccine because I wasn't sure if it was safe or not," Ma Xuecheng said. He paid more than 180 yuan, and the doctor said he needed five injections, giving him the first one then.

After returning home from the injection, about an hour later, Ma Xuecheng started feeling dizzy, numbness in his tongue, drooling, severe pain at the injection site, and the area became red and swollen. By the next day, his neck had become stiff.

On the eighth day, Ma Xuecheng went to work in Hengyang, but unexpectedly fainted on the first day of work and was sent to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hengyang for treatment, then admitted to the Fifth Department of Internal Medicine of the First Hospital of Zhuzhou City. After being discharged, on March 17, Ma Xuecheng was readmitted to the First Hospital of Zhuzhou City.

The head of the infectious disease department of the First Hospital of Zhuzhou City said that the hospital organized experts to conduct a consultation on Ma Xuecheng's condition but failed to find out the cause. As for whether it was related to the rabies vaccine, only the disease control department could make a determination, and they were unable to comment.

The head of the outpatient department of the Zhuzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention stated, "We preliminarily diagnosed him with rabies hysteria. He was extremely panicked about rabies, which led to excessive thinking and brought about feelings and symptoms."

It is understood that the rabies vaccine injected by Ma Xuecheng was produced by Liaoning Yisheng Biological Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., known as Freeze-dried Human Rabies Vaccine (Vero Cells).
