He goes out without eating.

Qi Yunhe, an ordinary air conditioner installer, became addicted to blood donation after his first participation in a charity blood donation in 1997. After several donations, he began donating platelets countless times. Whenever someone needed it, he would immediately come upon the call from the blood station staff... Over more than ten years, Qi Yunhe has donated nearly 20,000 milliliters of blood and was awarded the National Gold Award for Voluntary Blood Donation Contribution by the Ministry of Health, China Red Cross Society, and the General Logistics Department in 2008. He is the only one since the establishment of the Chuzhou Central Blood Station and is undoubtedly the "blood king" of Chuzhou.

Reporter Hu Hao

"Donating platelets at least 20 times"

When the reporter asked Qi Yunhe how many times he had donated blood, Qi Yunhe smiled and said: "I don't remember clearly, dozens of times, I remember donating platelets at least 20 times." Qi Yunhe showed the reporter several voluntary blood donation certificates, saying that some were lost due to moving, and sometimes he was "urgently summoned" by the blood station without bringing the book, and later forgot to make up for it, so he didn't know exactly how much blood he had donated.

According to Qi Yunhe's memory, the reporter roughly calculated once. Without counting the direct amount of blood he donated, each platelet donation is equivalent to four times 200ml of blood. More than 20 platelet donations are nearly 20,000 milliliters of blood! In 2008, the National Health Ministry, China Red Cross Society, and the General Logistics Department awarded him the National Gold Award for Voluntary Blood Donation Contribution, which was the first in Chuzhou.

Qi Yunhe rolled up his sleeve, and the reporter clearly saw that his elbow was densely dotted with needle holes. Qi Yunhe told the reporter: "Donating platelets requires inserting needles into both hands simultaneously, and the needles are particularly thick. Since I donate frequently, my elbows have left many needle holes."

"He treats the blood station as his home"

Qi Yunhe said that when the Chuzhou Central Blood Station was first established, it was "right across the street from my house", just separated by a road. "In 1997, the blood station promoted voluntary blood donation, so I tried it once. Unexpectedly, I became a regular visitor to the blood station!" Qi Yunhe laughed heartily.

He said that during these years of donating blood, he experienced four directors of the blood station, and the staff there got very familiar with him. Liu Tao, the director of the Quality Control Department of the Chuzhou Central Blood Station, who came with him, said: "You might think he is older than me, but we all call him 'Little Qi'. He is our good friend at the blood station, and we treat him like family."

Originally, Qi Yunhe was very kind-hearted. Whenever patients urgently needed blood, the blood station would call "Little Qi", and he would immediately go to the blood station to donate. Voluntary blood donation follows the principle of voluntariness, but Qi Yunhe never shirks responsibility. "Every time, he comes whenever called, treating the blood station as his home," Liu Tao said.

"I'll be back in one or two hours"

However, the reporter learned that for the first seven years of Qi Yunhe's thirteen years of voluntary blood donation, he secretly went out to donate without telling his family. His parents still do not know about his blood donation activities.

"At that time, the blood station staff called me, saying that the hospital urgently needed platelet donors. I rushed home after finishing work, changed clothes, and went out. Every time my wife asked where I went, I said I went out to work, and I would be back in one or two hours," Qi Yunhe said. Because donating platelets is different from donating blood, it takes one or two hours, and you can't eat before donating, so every time the family prepared meals, he didn't eat and went out, returning home to reheat his food after donating.

"I'll be back in one or two hours" thus became Qi Yunhe's fixed excuse every time he went out to donate blood. When his wife found out the truth, she blamed him for not taking care of his body, but since Qi Yunhe has always been healthy, even without catching a cold, his wife later supported him to continue donating. "One day, my younger son also told me that he wanted me to take time to bring him to donate blood, really happy!" Qi Yunhe said, however, elderly people have more conservative thoughts, to avoid shocking them, he temporarily kept it hidden from his parents.

"Helping others makes me happy too"

Voluntary blood donation does not offer any compensation. Liu Tao, the director of the Quality Control Department of the Chuzhou Central Blood Station, said that over these years, Qi Yunhe has never received any compensation, at most a bag of milk and cookies, despite his family's financial difficulties.

In his 40s, Qi Yunhe now works as an installer in an air conditioning company, busy climbing high and low every day, earning only about a thousand yuan a month. His wife works as a cleaner at a hospital, receiving only about 300 yuan a month, and their two sons still need to be raised. The family of four has been renting a house in Chuzhou for more than ten years, living a hard life. However, this did not stop Qi Yunhe's love, and he was always ready whenever patients needed him.

"Once, around ten o'clock at night, the blood station notified me that a patient had a car accident and urgently needed blood. At that time, I was working at heights outside, and I immediately rushed to the blood station to donate platelets," Qi Yunhe said. Contributing love, no matter how hard or tired, doesn't matter. Although he doesn't know who the recipient is, helping others makes him happy too.

"As long as the country needs, I will give"

Liu Tao, the director of the Quality Control Department of the Chuzhou Central Blood Station, said that donating platelets seems terrifying to many people because it requires inserting two relatively thick needles into the veins of both hands simultaneously, but such machine-collected platelets have a high purity and are beneficial to patients' health. "If platelets are extracted from the blood of multiple people, the purity will be much lower, and patients are also more likely to develop rejection reactions." Therefore, few people persist in donating platelets like Qi Yunhe.

"In fact, I recommend everyone to donate blood voluntarily. After I donated platelets, my body became better instead. I never catch a cold, let alone other serious diseases. Now in my 40s, my physical strength is better than several young people every time I install air conditioners," regarding Qi Yunhe's situation, Liu Tao said: "This is entirely possible, because the platelets in human blood renew every ten days or so. If the platelet components decrease, the feedback mechanism will stimulate the bone marrow's hematopoietic function, and the bone marrow that has lost its hematopoietic function will revive, making the body better."

Qi Yunhe said that now one of his relatives has leukemia, only eating but not producing blood, and he is currently understanding the procedures. If needed, he will immediately go to donate blood, and Qi Yunhe expressed that he is willing to donate his bone marrow after his death. "As long as the country needs, I will give!" Qi Yunhe said to the reporter.
