From the Hunan Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, after a series of surprise inspections, several batches of cosmetics originating from 18 countries affected by mad cow disease were inspected. Six brands of cosmetics containing animal ingredients produced in France and Japan, such as CD, Lancome, Ibega, Kosé, and Shiseido, were sealed. Previously, the Ministry of Health and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine issued a joint announcement prohibiting the importation and sale of cosmetics containing bovine or sheep brain and other tissues, internal organs, placentas, and blood from countries or regions affected by mad cow disease after April 20th, and all such cosmetics before that date must be recalled and removed from shelves.
In Beijing, 14 types of mad cow disease-related cosmetics, including Chanel and Nivea, were found during inspections conducted jointly by the Beijing Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau and the Beijing Health Bureau. These products, which originated from France, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, and other mad cow disease-affected areas, were still being sold in stores or used in beauty salons. Since April 20th was the deadline set by the Ministry of Health for removing mad cow disease-related cosmetics from shelves, all subsequently discovered mad cow disease-related products will be heavily penalized. The health supervision office immediately sealed all cosmetics without proper certification. The head of the supervisory office stated that if manufacturers or beauty salons cannot provide relevant proof, all sealed products will be destroyed.
