Exclusive interview with the president of the Garment Association

On the successful hosting of the first "Xinfuhai Cup" Brand Clothing Concept Design Competition, the reporter specially interviewed Mr. Chen Chongcai, General Manager of Beijing Dahongmen Apparel Trade City and Beijing Fucheng Apparel Building.

Reporter: As the head of Beijing Dahongmen Apparel Association and a member of the competition organizing committee, please share your views on the current industry development in light of this design competition?

Chen Chongcai: Nowadays, in the Chinese market and even the world market, cross-border products are becoming a new consumer trend. The popularity cycle of many trendy products, including clothing, is shortening, and more and more products are moving towards a trend of integration. However, many people in China believe that cross-border only limits to cooperation and complementation between different industries, rarely analyzing from an industrial perspective. When an industry develops to a certain stage, especially in apparel, products become increasingly homogenized. At this point, if a company wants to innovate and develop, it can only add more product value-added. Grafting some elements from other industries or products into their own products is a good method, which can bring consumers more experiences. This is the inevitable reason for the appearance of cross-border cooperation.

Reporter: How does the "Xinfuhai Cup" Brand Clothing Concept Design Competition demonstrate the design concept and practical science?

Chen Chongcai: In the domestic apparel design field, over the years, the practical creation skill of apparel design has been artificially artistic, conceptualized, and fictionalized. As a result, the majority of people unconsciously separate design from products when looking at apparel design. The production of brand products and the release of brand fashion are the same. Facts have proven that whether it's the development of brands or the improvement of designers, this concept is wrong. Through the first "Xinfuhai Cup" Brand Clothing Concept Design Competition, we tie together concepts and utility, place creativity and consumption in one place. Based on the current state of the industry, this may also be a kind of cross-border. But I believe that this so-called 'cross-border' will become the inevitable path for China's apparel industry to go global and for Chinese apparel brands to win larger markets, and it is also a very correct path.

Design serves consumption; this fundamental theory has been forgotten by many people over the years.

Reporter: The organization and hosting of this competition revolve around the commercial area of Beijing Dahongmen. Can you talk about the value and future of the Dahongmen business district as a factor of 'geographical advantage' for this event?

Chen Chongcai: The Beijing Dahongmen apparel wholesale trade circle is recognized as the largest and strongest apparel wholesale distribution center in the north, and also a typical model for the standardized economic development of apparel wholesalers. The entire trade zone has already incubated thousands of its own brands. As a core area of Beijing's apparel and fashion trade and processing industry, the wholesale of clothing, footwear, and light textile goods here accounts for more than 50% of Beijing's total sales of similar clothing. How to take advantage of the national focus on developing creative cultural economy, enhance the regional industrial economy, and promote the development of local apparel brands, has become a key issue for the leaders of the Dahongmen industry to consider.

Reporter: As landmark factors preserving value in the Dahongmen business district, what role do Dahongmen Apparel Trade City and Fucheng Apparel Building play in this event? What opportunities do they face?

Chen Chongcai: As the core and emblematic enterprises of the Dahongmen Apparel Trade Circle, Dahongmen Apparel Trade City and Fucheng Apparel Building bear the historical mission of leading the better and faster development of the Dahongmen apparel and fashion cultural creative industry cluster. Through the hosting of the "Xinfuhai Cup" Brand Clothing Concept Design Competition, they actively utilize excellent external apparel design talent resources and link them with local brands, promoting regional brand development in culture, creativity, products, and many other aspects. On this basis, they explore zero-distance communication and dialogue between China's apparel design field and market consumption, seeking new development models. It can be believed that the success of this competition will be the beginning of the Dahongmen region's apparel industry opening up new horizons.

Reporter: This is the inaugural edition of the competition, what are your expectations regarding the results of the competition?

Chen Chongcai: For participating brands, whether the novel design concepts and comprehensive product improvements brought by the designers can receive good market feedback is still unknown. It will be directly scored by post-competition market performance. However, through this competition, all participating brands will gain exploration experience in product design and cultural connotation, which will have a profound impact on their future development.
