In Xiangjiaba Town, Shuifu County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province, there are three remote villages. For many years, the villagers here have lived a quiet life. But in the past two years, 12 young and middle-aged men from these three villages have died successively. Before they died, they all worked at a quartz sand factory in Guan'gou Township, Fengyang County, Chuzhou City, Anhui Province, and they all suffered from a "strange disease". In March this year, after this incident was exposed, physical examinations were carried out for more than 400 migrant workers who had worked at Anhui's quartz sand factory, and more than 30 cases of pneumoconiosis patients were found. Subsequently, the government provided free treatment for seriously ill patients and helped them claim compensation. As of July 2009, the compensation still had not made any substantial progress.
