Laser Diode Mitsubishi Electric has recently announced the completion of the development of its new generation of 2.5Gbps high-power laser diodes in the ML9xx46 series, and plans to provide samples to users on November 11. It is understood that these lasers will be very suitable for applications such as FTTH GPON networks.
Most of the currently known FTTH networks are built using PON technology, and it is necessary to improve their downstream transmission rates to meet the growing bandwidth demands of users. Mitsubishi Electric stated that the transmission rate of most PON networks today is below 1.25Gbps, and many access stations are moving towards the 2.5Gbps rate of GPON. The US has already begun large-scale deployment of FTTP networks based on GPON, and Japan is reportedly planning to deploy this technology in 2007.
