The Seventh of the World's Top Ten Pirate Islands - La Blanquilla

La Blanquilla Island is located in Venezuela. There are not many ships passing within visible distance of the island. Colin Wood, the author of "The Pirate Republic," believed that it was a very good hiding place for those who wanted to evade legal punishment on Barbados and French Martinique. In the 18th century, the pirate "Black Sam" established his pirate base on the island and hid a great deal of treasure there. These treasures were discovered in 1984, and the Venezuelan government will begin using these treasures to develop national tourism facilities in June 2007.
