The Earth's largest search engine company, Google, has established a charitable foundation called Google.org, with a starting fund of 1 billion US dollars, aimed at addressing issues such as poverty, disease, and global warming. Unlike regular charitable foundations, Google.org seeks to make a profit. It provides funding for startups, partners with venture capitalists, and even lobbies members of Congress, and of course, it also pays taxes. One of the first projects is a plan to develop a fuel-saving chargeable hybrid car engine that can travel 100 miles per gallon of gas.
