Many people still think of Google as just a search engine, but that perception is now out of date. Although products or services such as Google Docs, Google Spreadsheets, Blogger, and YouTube have not yet generated much revenue for Google, they are definitely not just supplementary businesses. Carl believes that these web applications represent a fundamental transformation, indicating a significant shift from the desktop to the web, which will redefine computing and Google's business model in the future.

To make it easier for people to understand this transformation, Carl specifically cited an analogous example — the development of electricity. He believes that the real innovation in electricity was not Thomas Edison's idea of installing a generator in every factory, but rather the concept of Samuel Insull, one of Edison's former employees, who created a central power plant to supply electricity to an entire region. It was because of Insull's idea that electricity prices quickly dropped and became accessible to ordinary households.
