On March 2, Google launched the Chinese trial version of Book Search. The goal of this new product is to allow users in China and around the world to conveniently search for, and subsequently purchase, various Chinese books online. Chinese is the eighth language for which Google provides full-text book searches globally. Users simply need to enter a "keyword" or term in the Google Book Search box to quickly find and match relevant books. Google digitizes books by scanning them, with all scanning work being completed in the United States. Users can search the full text of books, but only a few public domain books, whose copyright protection has expired, can be viewed in their entirety; the rest only show partial content. Google Book Search generates revenue by adding advertisements to pages, but this feature has not yet been added to the Chinese version. Readers who wish to purchase books can do so by clicking on the links provided by Google Book Search, which will redirect them to relevant online bookstores to buy the books.
