This morning, as usual, I opened Gmail and had a feeling that something was off... About five seconds later, a prompt message popped up, announcing a new feature — Themes.
So I went to Settings, and I was indeed amazed. I quickly took a full screenshot and added it to my Quick Links:
There are a total of 30 new themes: the first 15 are traditional line-frame styles with different color schemes; the next 15 are pattern-designed themes, some of which come with a "Location" function.
When I tried out the Planets theme, it prompted me to select a Country/Region and City, and these were mandatory fields — you couldn't save until everything was filled in.
According to the Gmail Help documentation, some themes may use this Location information. For example, based on local time, sunrise/sunset, and weather conditions, the themes may change accordingly.
Quote:
"In some cases, you can also customize by location. Some themes change during the day, and we use the location information you provide to correctly time these changes with your local sunrise, sunset, and/or weather. If you select one of these themes, you’ll see a Country/Region drop-down menu appear. Select the country you want, and then enter a city in the field provided. If you don’t enter a city, or enter an invalid one, we’ll set your location to the capital city of the country you selected. When you’re done, click Save."
When I have some free time, I will try each theme for three to five days to see if there are any changes over time and to determine which ones I will use for the next three to five months. Personally, ZFreet thinks the Shiny theme is quite good, and the accompanying logo has a great feel.
Of course, what I'm concerned about is when the "import" function for Themes will be available? This would mean that you could plagiarize, copy, modify, create, and release new themes yourself instead of being limited to the current 30.
Although "Google developed most of the themes, but three were designed by external artists," ZFreet personally feels that the user experience of some of these themes isn't great. The color schemes are rough and severely affect visual recognition. Of course, the Terminal theme is the most creative among the current 30, but it's not suitable for long-term use — be careful with your eyes...
