Gmail adds SMS Chat - US users can text for free with Gmail

Gmail users can now send text messages to their phones through the built-in chat feature in Gmail. Google added this feature to Gmail LABS today. You can turn it on in the English version of Gmail LABS.

Keith Coleman, product manager for Gmail, said the feature will be available to all users tonight.

Once this feature is enabled, enter your phone number into the search box of the chat function to see the relevant options for sending SMS messages.

If you already have a phone number stored in your contact, you can use it directly by entering your name. Due to regional restrictions, this feature is currently only available in the United States, and American users can enjoy this service for free.
