When Sony first announced that the PlayStation 3 would be able to run Linux directly, it was very exciting. Initially, installing Linux directly was a bit challenging. The installation program supported by the PS3 ran custom scripts, manually transforming Fedora Core 5 or 6 installation DVDs into systems capable of running on the special PS3 kernel. People spent a lot of time trying to get other systems, such as Ubuntu, working. Terrasoft's Yellow Dog Linux came with a graphical installer that truly worked on the PS3, and it was one result of these efforts.
