The entire "His Dark Materials Trilogy" centers around a little girl named Lyra who has lost both her parents. She grew up like a wild child in an authoritative college similar to Oxford University, but her abundant curiosity gets her involved in a conspiracy. One of Lyra's good friends was kidnapped by a mysterious organization called Gobblers. To rescue her friend, the 12-year-old protagonist travels to a parallel world in another time dimension, and the great mission of saving the world falls on her shoulders. As she adventures and explores, she discovers more astonishing and even horrifying facts. In the first book, "The Golden Compass", the story takes place in a fantastic otherworld. It appears similar to Lyra's world, but here it is ruled by both science and magic. In this icy otherworld, chaos ensues due to the mystery of "Dust", and Lyra embarks on an adventure with other companions such as the mysterious young boy Will and the armed bear king Iorek.
