Shockwave is a multimedia player developed by Macromedia. You can play and watch files through Shockwave, with higher efficiency and better effects. Like Flash, Shockwave also requires plugin support.
Shockwave is also an online streaming media playback technology provided by Macromedia (now acquired by Adobe). The difference between Shockwave and Flash technology lies in the fact that Flash is an online vector animation technology with certain interactive programming functions. Shockwave is a more complex playback technology; due to its powerful, extensible scripting engine, it can achieve 3D effect mini-games, create chat rooms, manipulate HTML, parse XML2 documents, and control vector graphics. Both are streaming media technologies. However, Flash starts much faster than Shockwave. Flash is made using Flash software, with file extensions of .swf (Shockwave Flash Format), while Shockwave is made using Director, with file extensions of .dcr.
Frame rate determines the maximum playback speed of the media. The actual playback speed of Shockwave and Flash is usually unable to reach the specified playback rate due to the large amount of computation required for playback. The internal engines of the two are different; the frame rate of Shockwave is typically between 30-60, while the default frame rate of Flash is 12, generally ranging from 12-30. Essentially, Shockwave uses a high-performance raster compositing engine, while Flash is essentially a real-time vector-to-raster rendering engine. Typically, vector-to-raster rendering takes longer than simply compositing raster images, which is why Shockwave can provide a higher frame rate than Flash.
