CNET reported on December 10th that the head of a company developing mobile applications anticipated a major upgrade for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 in February of the following year. This upgrade would ease restrictions on third-party developers and potentially increase the number of "long-tail" applications.

The Windows Phone 7 update will add copy and paste functionality, as well as provide a better method for enterprises to deploy their own applications. The update will also relax restrictions on some applications, such as allowing them to store data locally. If an application is intended for users to download files like music or office documents to local storage, it must be completed through the web browser.

Developers are pleased with the Windows Phone 7 update but are also somewhat frustrated because they have already developed some applications based on the existing restrictions and now need to re-modify them.
