I estimate its principle is the number of times the leg shakes, and the reason why it needs to be placed in the pocket is probably based on the swing of the leg. This is just a guess, otherwise I can't figure out how it calculates. You can try putting it in your pocket and keeping that leg still, and see if it will still record the number of steps.
It has its own driver, and you can check its recording status on dedicated software via USB connection. It is estimated that it will be sold abroad in November, with a price of 17 US dollars.
