□ Reporter Han Jingwei, Correspondent Wang Bin Core Tip: A sorting clerk at a logistics company in Zhengzhou took advantage of his position to steal customer goods. In the span of half a year, he committed theft five times, one of which involved stealing over 3600 grams of gold artifacts worth more than 1.18 million yuan.
Yesterday, the Zhongyuan District Court handed down its first-instance verdict: Chen Jun (a pseudonym) was sentenced to 15 years in prison for theft and fined 100,000 yuan.
1 Logistics Company Oversight Fails, Sorter Repeatedly Steals
Chen Jun is 31 years old. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison in 1997. After being released, he started working at a logistics company. Dissatisfied with his salary, he decided to steal customer goods.
One day in September last year, Chen Jun took advantage of others not paying attention and hid a package marked as "computer". He violated regulations by not reporting the relevant information about the package to the company. After work, Chen Jun took the package home, opened it, and found a laptop inside.
Subsequently, no one followed up on this matter, which made Chen Jun's greed grow even bigger. Over the next few months, Chen Jun stole three mobile phones and took them home. Although someone had asked about the lost goods, Chen Jun denied any knowledge of it, and after a few days, the matter was dropped.
2 Stealing Gold Worth Over 1.18 Million Yuan
On February 17th this year, while working, Chen Jun became interested in a package sent from Shenzhen to a bank in Zhengzhou.
"The package was labeled 'artifacts', it was quite large and heavy when I lifted it," he said. After taking it home and opening the packaging, he found two sets of "Xu Beihong's Twelve Zodiac Signs Golden Collection" and two "Golden Toads", weighing several kilograms.
A week later, a customer who had lost a phone came to the company demanding an investigation and compensation. Through an internal investigation, the company identified Chen Jun as a major suspect and reported him to the police. On February 25th, under pressure, Chen Jun confessed to stealing the "Twelve Zodiac Signs Golden Collection" and led the company staff to his home where all the stolen items were recovered.
After examination by the Henan Provincial Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Institute, the two sets of "Twelve Zodiac Signs Golden Collection" weighed a total of 2400 grams, with a gold purity of thousandths. The two "Golden Toads" weighed a total of 1200.30 grams, also with a gold purity of thousandths, valued at over 1.18 million yuan at that time.
3 Management in Logistics Industry Needs Improvement
In addition, the stolen computer, mobile phones, etc., had a combined value of more than 10,000 yuan.
The court ruled that Chen Jun's actions constituted theft and thus issued the above sentence.
Presiding Judge Jin Canghua told reporters that the logistics industry is now very developed, but the quality of its workforce varies greatly. There is an urgent need to strengthen industry management and eliminate insider threats.
