In the early hours of yesterday morning, a BMW car collided violently with a taxi while traveling along Shuguang Road. The taxi was severely damaged, and a passenger inside suffered broken and dislodged teeth. After the incident, someone even impersonated a police officer in an attempt to privately settle with the passengers in the taxi, and the BMW driver also left the scene. A series of unexpected actions raised doubts: was the offending driver under the influence of alcohol?
Mr. Wang, a tourist from Shanghai, along with three others, took advantage of the Spring Festival holiday to visit Hangzhou. At around 1:30 AM yesterday, after finishing their tour of the West Lake scenic area, they hailed a taxi to return to their accommodation at Xixi Wetland. When the car passed by No. 81 Shuguang Road (near the Shuguang Community), everyone inside was startled by a sudden violent collision.
"It felt like our car lost control," Mr. Wang said, taking a while to regain his composure. He noticed that the airbag on the passenger side had already deployed. "I didn't have major issues since I was protected by the airbag, but one of my friends in the back seat hit the guardrail of the driver's seat during the jolt, breaking two teeth and loosening four others. His mouth hurt so much he couldn't close it completely."
Mr. Wang quickly got out of the car to understand what happened. It turned out that a northbound BMW car suddenly made a U-turn near No. 81 Shuguang Road and collided solidly with the taxi. After being hit, the taxi lost control, ran up onto the roadside greenbelt, and only stopped after hitting a tree. There were visible damage marks on the right front of the BMW car, and the taxi's front end was more severely damaged, with its left side uneven.
"Three people seemed to get out of the BMW car, all young people in their twenties or thirties," Mr. Wang said. The driver was a young man with yellow hair who kept making phone calls. His companion approached and said they would take responsibility and could negotiate. "The scene was still a bit chaotic at that time, and I wasn't quite clear about what he was saying to me. The general idea was that he wanted to privately settle. However, when he spoke, I could smell alcohol on him."
After the collision, Mr. Wang's first reaction was to protect the scene and report the incident promptly to the police. Unexpectedly, just one minute after reporting, someone claiming to be a police officer arrived, tall and thin. "He said he came to handle the matter and see if we could privately settle," Mr. Wang said, questioning why the accident officer wasn't wearing a police uniform. He asked the person to show his police ID, which he couldn't produce, exposing the lie. The fake police officer was actually a friend of the BMW driver.
A few minutes later, the real accident officers arrived at the scene and began their investigation. However, the driver of the BMW car was already gone, having run away toward a nearby residential area amidst the confusion. After investigation by the traffic police, the fleeing driver was identified as Mr. Shu, the son of the BMW owner, who surrendered himself to the Traffic Police Brigade of Xihu District at 11:00 AM yesterday.
Why did the offending driver flee the scene, and was he drinking alcohol? Currently, the traffic police department has followed legal procedures to draw blood samples for investigation.
The traffic police department also stated that they will not tolerate drunk driving and will further intensify rectification efforts. During the Spring Festival, Hangzhou's traffic police carried out a concentrated rectification campaign against drunk driving - from January 22 to January 28, the traffic police department investigated 84 cases of drunk driving, including 7 cases of drunk driving.
