Our reporter (Wang Wei) - A lawyer, surnamed Liu, met a masseuse on a business trip. After cohabiting for several years, he was pressured to marry her. When Liu tried to break up with her, he was harassed and eventually stabbed the woman to death with a knife.

This morning, it was reported that Liu was sentenced to 14 years in prison by the First Intermediate People's Court for intentional injury, and his political rights were deprived for three years.

Liu, 42 years old, has a postgraduate degree and is a lawyer at a well-known law firm in Beijing.

According to the prosecution, at 10:00 am on February 15, 2011, Liu had a conflict with Ms. Zhu, 29 years old, in the rented room of a large material transportation company in Wanshou Road due to trivial matters. Liu stabbed Ms. Zhu in the neck, chest, and waist with a knife, causing her acute hemorrhagic shock due to the rupture of the right common carotid artery and the right lobe of the liver. After the crime, Liu called 110 to report the incident.

During the court session, Liu said that he met Ms. Zhu, who worked as a masseuse, when he went on a business trip to Weifang, Shandong in 2005. A year later, Ms. Zhu came to Beijing and found him, and they started dating and living together as boyfriend and girlfriend.

In May 2007, Ms. Zhu said she was pregnant, but Liu firmly refused to have a child. Later, Ms. Zhu was diagnosed with kidney disease and could not have children, so she had an induced abortion.

After the pregnancy incident, Ms. Zhu kept asking Liu to get married, but Liu refused. "She kept finding ways to bother me, severely affecting my work and life," Liu said.

In January 2011, while Ms. Zhu was receiving treatment in her hometown in Shandong, she called Liu and said she knew he had a new girlfriend.

On the afternoon of February 13, 2011, Ms. Zhu suddenly returned to Beijing and told Liu: "You have a girlfriend now. I'll take my things and go back to Shandong to recuperate. Give me 3000 yuan for medical expenses."

Later, Ms. Zhu raised the price to 5000 yuan. "To avoid being bothered by her and to not affect my relationship with my new girlfriend, I readily agreed," Liu said.

On February 14, Liu bought Ms. Zhu a train ticket for the next day back to her hometown. He sent her belongings via mail and transferred 5050 yuan into her Construction Bank card.

Liu said that on the evening of that day, Ms. Zhu boiled milk for him, and they didn't go to bed until midnight. In the middle of the night, he suddenly felt intense pain and realized that Ms. Zhu had stabbed him. He quickly went to the kitchen, took a fruit knife, and returned to the bedroom where he stabbed Ms. Zhu...

Liu's defense was handled by his colleagues from the same law firm. They argued that Liu's actions constituted self-defense. Liu himself also believed he did not commit a crime. Ms. Zhu's family filed a civil lawsuit demanding a total compensation of 9.5 million yuan from Liu.

●Court Verdict

The claim of self-defense was not accepted

The court ruled that there was sufficient evidence proving that Liu had a conflict with Ms. Zhu over emotional issues and stabbed her to death. However, the claim that Liu stabbed Ms. Zhu while defending against unlawful aggression lacked evidence, and the court did not accept it.

Considering the emotional disputes and specific circumstances of the case, the court made a judgment in sentencing and sentenced Liu to compensate Ms. Zhu's family with over 360,000 yuan.
