Changsha, Hunan - After discovering his girlfriend spent a night out with her ex-boyfriend, Xiao Nie (a pseudonym) became enraged and grabbed a lighter. He set fire to the bed sheets, a mahjong tablecloth... Charged with arson, Xiao Nie was prosecuted by the Tianxin District People's Procuratorate. Yesterday, we learned from the procuratorate that Xiao Nie was sentenced in the first instance to three and a half years in prison. In response to the charges, he cried and said, "I made a big mistake because I was too angry at the time."
Xiao Nie is 20 years old and has a high school education. During a gathering, he met Xiao Gao (a pseudonym), and they quickly became lovers. Xiao Nie even moved into Xiao Gao's home to live together. During their relationship, Xiao Nie discovered that Xiao Gao was still emotionally entangled with her ex-boyfriend, which led to arguments between them.
On the morning of October 3 last year, after seeing his girlfriend leave with her ex-boyfriend and not return, Xiao Nie went searching for her, continuously calling and sending text messages, but received no reply from Xiao Gao. The more he thought about it, the angrier he became. He then picked up a lighter and set fire to the bed sheets, the mahjong tablecloth, and a jute bag inside the room, before hastily leaving the scene. After noticing the fire, the neighbors immediately called 119, and together with the arriving firefighters, managed to extinguish the flames.
Upon hearing the news, Xiao Gao also returned and sent a text message seeking help from Xiao Nie. After returning home, Xiao Nie, upon seeing Xiao Gao crying uncontrollably, felt remorseful and admitted in front of her family that he had started the fire. Subsequently, Xiao Nie went to the police station for investigation. It was determined that Xiao Nie's actions resulted in all household items such as the TV and air conditioner in Xiao Gao's home being completely destroyed, causing losses amounting to over 10,000 yuan.
The Tianxin District People's Procuratorate filed a public prosecution against Xiao Nie on suspicion of arson. Recently, the court held a trial for this case.
Standing in the courtroom, facing the prosecution's charges, Xiao Nie shed tears. He expressed regret, stating that he made a grave mistake due to a momentary loss of control. Regarding the losses incurred by Xiao Gao's family, Xiao Nie said he was unable to provide compensation.
