Chen Jun could not help but feel nervous while having his blood drawn. This photo was taken by reporter Yang Tianxiao of our newspaper.

According to the report from our staff reporter Su Xiaoming and intern reporter Wang Xianghui, at 8 a.m. yesterday, Chen Jun, a 26-year-old reporter for Zhejiang Television, walked into the Blood Collection Center of the 307 Hospital to donate lymphocytes for an 18-year-old leukemia patient in Xiangshan, Ningbo. On August 5th last year, Chen Jun had donated bone marrow to this patient. As the patient was about to recover, his condition suddenly changed, and he urgently needed Chen Jun's lymphocytes to save his life. Despite knowing that donating cells again would definitely have an impact on his body, Chen Jun once again extended his arms.

It took 6 years to find a match.

Yesterday morning at the 307 Hospital in Beijing, Chen Jun, wearing a yellow shirt, jeans, and sneakers, smiled brightly.

Chen Jun introduced that on May 14th last year, which happened to be his birthday, the Chinese Marrow Donor Program called him to inform him that he was a match with a patient in Xiangshan, Ningbo. "Receiving the call felt like winning the lottery, after waiting 6 years, I finally got my chance." When Chen Jun was in his final year of high school, after a door-to-door son-in-law feeling oppressed stabbed four members of his father-in-law’s family, he became a volunteer for the Chinese Marrow Donor Program, hoping to one day successfully match with someone. At the time, due to concerns for their son's health, Chen Jun's parents were not in favor of his decision, but under Chen Jun's persistent persuasion, they eventually agreed.

On August 5th last year, Chen Jun went to the Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and donated 150 milliliters of hematopoietic stem cells, which were then transplanted into the leukemia patient. Chen Jun said that even after the donation was completed, he did not know the patient's name or what he looked like; he only knew that the recipient was an 18-year-old younger brother from Xiangshan, Ningbo.

After graduating from university in 2008, Chen Jun joined Zhejiang Television as a reporter and was borrowed to work at CCTV last autumn.

Donating Again After A Year

In May this year, the Zhejiang Red Cross Society suddenly called Chen Jun, informing him that the recipient's condition had relapsed and that lymphocyte transfusion was urgently needed to save his life.

Compared to the decisiveness of the first time, Chen Jun underwent intense internal conflict this time. Chen Jun said he did not know how the second donation would affect him, and his parents would definitely not agree. A month later, he made the decision to agree to the donation, "If I don't donate this time, all the previous efforts will be wasted." Under Chen Jun's repeated persuasion, his soft-hearted mother eventually agreed with her son's decision.

According to the doctors at the collection center, very few people undergo secondary donations, and it will certainly affect the body, but generally, recovery takes about a week.

The entire collection process lasted three and a half hours, collecting a total of 100 milliliters. Chen Jun said he just felt a little weak, with no other sensations.

A Letter Of Gratitude From The Recipient

"Brother, your selfless and great help has allowed me to overcome the disease and survive. I will not disappoint your expectations, I will take good care of myself, looking forward to the day when we can meet," wrote the younger brother suffering from leukemia in Xiangshan, Ningbo, with neat handwriting.

The recipient's family also sent a letter of thanks, simply praying for good fortune for the good person.

Chen Jun introduced that the younger brother who received the donation is a big fan of Yao Ming. During another interview with Yao Ming, he told Yao Ming about the situation. Afterwards, Yao Ming proactively contacted the hospital, spoke on the phone with the younger brother, and encouraged him to recover soon.

At 5 p.m. yesterday, the staff of the Zhejiang Red Cross Society had already brought the collected lymphocytes back to Hangzhou.

Mother: Let Me Donate

To accompany Chen Jun through the collection process, his mother from Zigong, Sichuan came all the way to Beijing. Throughout the entire collection process, the gray-haired, slim mother never left Chen Jun's side.

Chen Jun said that he didn't want his mother to come because he feared she would worry, but his mother insisted on coming. Upon arriving in Beijing and seeing her son, she said, "Let me donate." These words made Chen Jun both heartbroken and moved. He held back tears and told his mother that donation requires matching, and cannot be done arbitrarily. Chen Jun said his mother didn't understand, only knowing that it was a matter of donating bone marrow, something significant that could harm the body.

Watching her pale and weak-looking son, Chen's mother sitting by the bed cried repeatedly. With tears streaming down her face, she took photos of him, while Chen Jun kept teasing her to cheer her up, "Mom, your photography skills are so bad, let's not take any more pictures."

Chen's mother said she would stay in Beijing for a few days to keep her son company, cook some delicious food for him, and help him regain his strength.
