Why did the man do this? What was his motive for the crime? At around 8 a.m., on the 11th floor of the inpatient department of the oncology department at the Chaozhou Central Hospital, a man approached Deputy Director Doctor Liu who was making rounds and pulled out a knife, stabbing Doctor Liu fiercely from behind.
The stab pierced through Doctor Liu's lung. According to preliminary police investigation, Luan confessed that during his father's treatment at the Chaozhou Central Hospital in 2004, he suspected Doctor Liu of being irresponsible, leading to the worsening of his father's condition and eventual death. Thus, Luan harbored hatred and planned revenge.
According to a report by the Chaozhou police, the detained suspect Luan admitted that in 2004, his father was treated at this hospital. He suspected that the then attending doctor, Liu, was negligent, causing his father's condition to worsen and resulting in his death. After eight years of harboring resentment, yesterday Luan brought a knife to the hospital to take revenge.
In the morning, a man entered the oncology inpatient department of the Chaozhou Central Hospital and stabbed Deputy Director Liu from behind, injuring him. During the chase, two other medical staff were also injured.
The scene became extremely chaotic; people in the corridor quickly retreated back into the rooms and closed the doors tightly. Some bystanders attempted to subdue the knife-wielding man. Ultimately, the middle-aged man was subdued and taken away from the scene by the arriving police officers.
The hospital director informed Guangzhou Daily reporters that all three injured individuals are not in life-threatening conditions and are under observation in the hospital (see the picture below).
Chaozhou Public Security Bureau reported that the knife-wielding man is 39 years old, surnamed Luan, and is from Fengxi District, Chaozhou. The Xiangqiao Public Security Bureau's Xima Police Station arrested Luan after receiving the emergency call.
The stab was extremely brutal, prompting the injured Doctor Liu to instinctively run away. A male doctor standing nearby tried to grab the knife from the assailant but was also stabbed.
Deputy Dean Li Guicai of Chaozhou Central Hospital said that the man did not cause any commotion, "Our doctors didn't even recognize him."
Carrying the knife, the man continued chasing Doctor Liu towards the nurse station. Deputy Dean Li Guicai stated that the man used surgical scissors to injure another doctor who tried to stop him.
Among the victims, Doctor Liu, who was unexpectedly stabbed in the back, sustained the most severe injuries. Deputy Director of Surgery at Chaozhou Central Hospital, Dr. Li Ruikai, told reporters that the stab penetrated through Doctor Liu's back into his lung. The hospital immediately performed debridement and suturing surgery which lasted nearly four hours.
