Kunming, January 17th - Report by journalist Chuan Wan Zhong and intern Shi Huai Ji: Gambling in groups for profit, illegally detaining people to collect high interest, causing disturbances leading to one death, forming gangs to extort protection fees... These scenarios from the movie "Young and Dangerous" were played out in Xundian County, Kunming City, Yunnan Province. A real-life version of the "Hung Sing" gang, led by Zhang Xiaodong, Ma Jingwen, and Li Hongwei, dominated the area. Recently, the Kunming People's Procuratorate brought charges against Zhang Xiaodong and 35 other members of his "Hung Sing" gang with ten charges including organizing, leading, and participating in a mafia-like organization. On January 17th, the Intermediate People's Court of Kunming opened the trial.
The reporter found that more than 90% of the 36 defendants were born in the 1980s or even the 1990s. The leader of the "Hung Sing" gang, Zhang Xiaodong, whose nickname is "Mountain Chicken," is only 28 years old. Zhang Xiaodong and the backbone members of the "Hung Sing" gang such as Ma Jingwen and Li Hongwei were all schoolmates. When they were in junior high school, they watched every single installment of the "Young and Dangerous" Hong Kong series. The so-called "jianghu" (martial world) and the concept of "brotherhood loyalty" in the movies had a huge impact on them. According to the prosecution, in 1995, defendant Zhang Xiaodong, Xu Zhengsong, and others established the "Hung Sing" gang in Xundian County, setting up subgroups like the Green Dragon Hall, Mighty Tiger Hall, and Flying Eagle Hall. It eventually developed into a mafia-like organization with a basically fixed structure, clear hierarchy, and a large number of participants.
The prosecution believes that Zhang Xiaodong relied on the power of the "Hung Sing" gang in Xundian, acquiring companies at low prices, and through criminal activities such as running casinos, gambling, extortion, illegal detention, and violent debt collection in places like Songming, Xundian, and Kunming, amassed wealth. To expand their influence and control range, they also engaged in mass brawls, intentional injuries, and causing disturbances, having a terrible impact on society.
The prosecution charged Zhang Xiaodong with six crimes: organizing and leading a mafia-like organization, mass brawls, intentional injury, running a casino, illegal detention, and forging company and enterprise seals. In response, Zhang Xiaodong said he had only seen the "Hung Sing" gang in movies and had no idea there was a "Hung Sing" gang in Xundian County. "I don't even know what a black society is."
According to the Kunming Intermediate People's Court, it is expected that the trial will take about three days to complete.
