The head of the obstetrics department at the Maternal and Child Health Hospital explained that it is not good for a fetus to be too large or too small. A normal fetal weight should be between 2.5 kilograms to 4 kilograms. Babies born weighing less than 2.5 kilograms are considered low-weight babies, while those over 4 kilograms are considered macrosomic infants. Aside from genetic factors, this is mainly caused by excessive nutrition during the mother's pregnancy.
"The middle period of pregnancy is particularly important. If ultrasound checks show the baby is on the larger side, the mother must start controlling her weight and try to eat less sweets," said the responsible person with no little concern. From January 1st to yesterday, the hospital has delivered 191 macrosomic infants, averaging about one every two days. The heaviest among them weighed 5.25 kilograms.
The responsible person stated that macrosomic infants may come with a series of health problems, but influenced by the traditional concept of welcoming a big, healthy baby boy, many citizens let expectant mothers consume excessive supplements during pregnancy.
Changsha Evening News reported on December 4th that the Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Changsha announced that they welcomed another "super baby" weighing 5.2 kilograms on the morning of December 2nd. This was also the heaviest baby born in the second half of this year at the hospital. Doctors reminded that in recent years, the birth rate of infants exceeding 4 kilograms has been on the rise, but newborns aren't necessarily healthier when fatter. Expectant mothers should pay attention to their weight during pregnancy.
The new mother Ms. Shu from Shuangfeng County said, "I never expected to set a record." She explained that her diet during pregnancy was relatively normal, and her son was delivered via cesarean section at the 39th week of pregnancy. Despite being newly born, this "super baby" already had chubby cheeks and looked as if he were two or three months old.
