The弊端of the three-good-student评选should be reformed. Either the评选should not be linked with various actual interests, but this is definitely unrealistic; or a completely new approach should be adopted, like the new evaluation standard that Experimental No.2 Primary School is preparing to implement. However, it's not that easy to do so. On one hand, good external conditions are needed, and on the other hand, schools themselves need great courage. The fairness and justice of the selection must also be guaranteed during the specific implementation process. Canceling the three-good-student评选is a good thing, but the problem is that good things often encounter many obstacles, causing the new evaluation standard to face various resistances. Especially, replacing the three-good-student with the "10+N+1" selection standard may end up as a case of "changing the soup but not the medicine". In this new evaluation standard, "10" refers to moral indicators such as love, patriotism, honesty, etc., "N" refers to the awards received, and "1" refers to the child's special skills. These indicators all have corresponding scores to facilitate the connection with the recommendation system. But in this way, the so-called "10+N+1" is more like a detailed version of the three-good-student selection standard. It's no wonder that some citizens say that this is even more restrictive than the three-good-student standard. In this situation, children who get high scores will naturally be very happy, while those who score low will probably feel just as bad as not being selected as a three-good-student.

The three-good-student selection has a history of many years. The advantages and disadvantages of this selection system are well known. Its advantage is to encourage the advanced, and its disadvantage is to undermine the enthusiasm of lagging students. Especially after the three-good-student selection was linked to the "primary school graduation to junior high school" recommendation, its disadvantages became increasingly obvious. The report mentioned that selecting three-good-students according to a ratio is undoubtedly labeling children as good students or bad students, which goes against educational philosophy. And if adopting the previous reform method of Experimental No.2 Primary School, that is, not setting a ratio limit when selecting three-good-students, this selection would lose its significance.
Other schools all select three-good-students, and if your school doesn't, that itself becomes a big problem. If the competent authority does not support, this reform will definitely not go through. This selection also involves an entire set of student evaluation systems, from school-level three-good-students to city-level three-good-students, every step relates to the students' own interests. If schools stop evaluating three-good-students, parents might find it hard to accept for a while. Moreover, the selection can change, but institutional factors have not been eliminated, such as the "primary school graduation to junior high school" recommendation still exists. Therefore, how the new evaluation standard smoothly connects with the original system will inevitably be a challenge.

Of course, Beijing Experimental No.2 Primary School intends to eliminate drawbacks and pursue benefits by conducting reform pilots, which is very commendable. Competent authorities and society might as well adopt an encouraging attitude and provide support and cooperation for this reform. After adopting this new evaluation standard, what problems will be encountered during the pilot phase, and what the school should do, can only be known after trying. If a new path can be explored thereby, benefiting the children, then it's fine for good things to take time.
Canceling the three-good-student selection is feared to encounter many obstacles. At the beginning of the new semester, Beijing Experimental No.2 Primary School plans to cancel the three-good-student selection system and replace it with the "10+N+1" new evaluation standard. Currently, the school is discussing the specific implementation plan to be submitted to the district education committee for approval.
A better method would be neither to select three-good-students nor give grades, but instead write a graduation summary (or recommendation letter) based on the students' strengths and characteristics, as a reference for the "primary school graduation to junior high school" recommendation. This can not only avoid the drawback of labeling children as good or bad students, but also benefit the children's future education development. Only, this practice entirely depends on the integrity of the school and teachers, and under the current circumstances, it is difficult not to degenerate into favoritism recommendations. This is the embarrassing situation that eliminating the three-good-student selection drawbacks and creating a new evaluation standard inevitably encounter. But it should be said that, from a long-term perspective, this is a relatively reasonable reform path.
