Xiaodong's parents are from Anhui and have worked in Xiaoshan for many years. Xiaodong studied at a middle school on Hongyouqiaolu Street in Guali Town, Xiaoshan. He never disappointed his parents as he consistently performed well academically.
Correspondent Zhong Fa and Gong Zhen reported that before the incident, Li Fukun owed more than 60,000 yuan in external debts. The reason he didn't retrieve the ransom was because he had already killed Xiaodong and couldn't return him. People who knew Li Fukun testified to the police that two days before the incident, Li Fukun was being pressured by debt collectors.
The police reviewed the surveillance footage of Xiaodong's route home on the day he was kidnapped. His parents recognized a familiar figure on the road their son took home every day. This person turned out to be their former neighbor, Li Fukun.
On the morning of June 29th, a body wrapped in a woven bag was found floating on a river near Chengzhong Community in Guali Town. After investigation, the police determined that the deceased was Xiaodong, who had been kidnapped the previous day.
Li Fukun is 32 years old and hails from Huibin County, Henan Province. In 2005, Li Fukun met a girlfriend from Anhui. Because she and Xiaodong's parents were from the same hometown, they became closer. In August 2007, Li Fukun was sentenced to one and a half years in prison for provoking trouble by the Xiaoshan District Court. He was released on August 11, 2008. During this period, Li Fukun's pregnant girlfriend and his parents, who had come to Xiaoshan, received meticulous care from Xiaodong's parents.
After a morning-long trial, the presiding judge stated that a first-instance verdict would be announced at a later date.
On the morning of June 29th, Li Fukun was arrested in his rented apartment. In the face of evidence, Li Fukan confessed that around 5 PM on June 28th, he waited at an intersection on Xiaodong's way home after school. Upon seeing Xiaodong, he lured him to his rented apartment under the pretext of playing computer games.
"Hearing from his (Xiaodong's) mother, his father was very wealthy, earning six to seven thousand yuan per month, and also doing extra jobs outside, making over ten thousand yuan per month," Li Fukan admitted that after deceiving Xiaodong into the apartment, he asked if Xiaodong's family had money and if they owned a house.
Once inside the apartment, Li Fukan used a rope to strangle Xiaodong to death by mechanical asphyxiation while he was playing on the computer. Subsequently, Li Fukan discarded Xiaodong's body, bicycle, and schoolbag into the river.
The murderer turned out to be a once relatively good neighbor.
"Someone forced me into debt, so I extended my hands towards someone's son."
"We don't want money, we don't need compensation; we want this person to disappear." Before the trial ended, Xiaodong's parents abandoned their initial civil compensation claim of more than 620,000 yuan and requested the court to sentence Li Fukan to death with immediate execution.
Speaking about the reason for killing Xiaodong, Li Fukan said it was because Xiaodong's mother incited discord between him and his wife (note: Li Fukan and his girlfriend were not officially registered). Originally, he just wanted Xiaodong to call his mother so he (Li Fukan) could properly teach Xiaodong's mother a lesson.
Xiaodong's parents were extremely anxious. They had agreed with the kidnapper to pay 80,000 yuan as ransom for their son's release. They even arranged the location for the ransom delivery. However, while they were raising the money, they never heard from the kidnapper or Xiaodong again.
The next day, the news of their son's murder reached Xiaodong's parents, leaving them heartbroken. Xiaodong had ridden his bike home after school at around 5 PM on the 28th, but afterward, neither his schoolbag nor his bike was seen again.
On the evening of June 28th, Xiaodong's parents continuously received text messages and calls from an unknown phone number. The caller claimed that Xiaodong was in his possession and demanded that Xiaodong's parents prepare the money without reporting to the police. During negotiations, the kidnapper played a recording where Xiaodong's voice could be heard saying, "Dad, come save me, give him the money, I want to go home, I want to go home."
Xiaodong's parents said that after Li Fukan was released from prison, he became lazy and gambled excessively. Li Fukan felt that Xiaodong's parents had incited discord between him and his girlfriend.
During the trial, Xiaodong's mother was unable to control her emotions from start to finish and spent most of the time crying. Like others, they did not understand why Li Fukan would kill the young teenager Xiaodong.
"I don't know." When Xiaodong's parents recounted in court how they had taken care of Li Fukan's girlfriend, child, and parents, Li Fukan coldly replied that he was serving time then and wasn't very clear about things outside.
