If you have bought jade from antique markets and it has become defaced, how should you deal with it? How do you care for jade that has been in your possession for a long time? These issues don't necessarily require you to struggle to find experts for help; you can learn to handle them yourself as long as you master a certain technique. Mr. Jia Wenzhong said that in order to grasp jade repair skills, we must first understand what kinds of jade there are. Jade is primarily composed of calcium silicate and fibrous minerals, with colors close to fat cream class, pure white color, delicate and moist. Soft jade contains a small amount of metal oxide ions, which can show blue, green, black, yellow, etc. Jadeite has a hardness of over 6.75 on the Mohs scale, composed of sodium silicate and aluminum-based materials, with a subtle crystal-like structure, hard texture, and glass-like luster.
It should be noted that the vast majority of China’s ancient jade artifacts are made of nephrite, especially Xinjiang Hetian jade, an important source of raw materials for ancient Chinese jade artifacts. For jade bought back from the market with soil on it, we must first clean the surface dirt. Cleaning can be done with water and alcohol; if the band is oil-free, acetone or thinner can be used for decontamination. Cleaning tools generally include toothbrushes for brushing away soil dirt, bamboo for repairs, and diluted hydrochloric acid or formic acid for removing dirt. Ultrasonic cleaning machines can also be used.
Additionally, local ironing methods can be applied, partially dehydrating rust or sizing and stripping after. For small broken pieces of jade, 502 adhesive can be used for bonding. When bonding, attention must be paid to ensuring the seam is tight, then use wire for live, so there is a certain pressure. Such bonded objects can be firmly bonded. After the glue flows out, it should be wiped off with an acetone solution.
For incomplete jade, you need to plaster and carve out the original things like decorations. Fill in the plaster mold when ready, remove the plaster carving type, color with resin poured into the mold, dried, remove the outer mold, and the appearance will closely resemble the original. Color patches can also be used, and ultimately, there should be no trace left behind. Gu Wenzhong mentioned that dental resin imported by hospitals, plus pigment, can achieve a jade repair effect that is basically the same as the original.
